Pixel Art / Re: Duelyst Attack Animation Tutorial
« on: June 17, 2016, 05:07:38 pm »
Thanks for the insights (specially on the lightining part). Those voice-over-paint-tutorials things are really nice, if you have the time for more that'd be great  :)

p.s. you guys are doing an awesome work in Duelyst  :y:

Looks like the chest animation has more frames than it really need at the end, or at least used in a better way. The core is really nice, this movement with the legs really fits the chibi look, it's just the end that's really choppy.

I agree with mysterymeat, the game looks nice and cute but the gameplay looks waay too slow. Looks like you have a consistent game already but I'd heavily consider making the gameplay more dynamic!  upvoted, good luck    :y:

something else to consider, what kind of animations those sprites will have in general? depending in the kind of motion they have, 8x8 might not be enough resolution to convey your intentions.

@conzeit: That is true, it is a work of surrealism after all, I may be analyzing this painting in a way that defies it's purpose. I've never seen this quote related to the "reaper valley", it's funny considering how this felt to me as the complete opposite, someone enclosed in darkness not realizing that an open bright sky is right above.

about scans  ::)

nah don't worry, this is a really good discussion thread!

I'm sure his work influenced a lot of people, I don't have any info to back it up but I feel like the writer behind "I have no mouth and I must scream" (Harlan Ellison) was one of those people. Not only because of the story itself but I feel like the visuals attached to this short story are a hint.

It is known that he was heavily involved with the development of the game as well

Wow, thanks for this thread.

I haven't seen much of his work but this one is definitely my favorite. From a technical point of view I thought it was strange for the person to be holding a torch in a place that is really not that dark, bright even. After looking it a few more times I realized that this might be because of how towering those figures are, we can see that this is an open place but from his point of view he's probably engulfed by the shadows of those giants with judgmental expressions. As Conzeit said, they really show some kind of intention, even those figures that look look "big statues" at first glance.

I'll jump in what MysteryMeat said just to add the recent video extra credits did about pose design, it's really interesting.

Expressing the character's personality through posing will help a lot too, the Avatar example also displays that very well.

General Discussion / Re: The History of Pixel Art

Maybe the first thing that hypothetical aliens will see of us is pixel art. Thoughts on its relevance to the timeline?

"those guys on earth really don't know what classic pixel art is all about, they're just trying to be artsy"

ok, serious now. I don't know if it holds relevance to the timeline because, as I understand, the arecibo message is not about graphic content and rather displays a series of informations that just happens to be in squares.
I'd (kinda) compare it to converting image to a sound format, it's just another form to display the information.

I believe the only exception is the human figure as it is literally the graphic representation, for this I think it shows that even "non artists" agree that squares are really good way to go for lo-fi communication.

maybe an honorable mention for the human figure?

Pixel Art / Re: [C+C]Ghostly Lion

It feels to me as a lion is getting out of a portal of some kind, mainly because of the black dots around the lion I believe. Maybe you could change the black to a very dark green color and/or make a better transition between the "fur" and the head.

Like jjhaggar said, we'd need a bit more of information (and images) to give you a good feedback.
Personally I believe a project so focused on the thematic of an specific era needs extra attention on nailing the ambient. I'd recommend looking at "We happy few", "Bioshock", "Ether one"...
