I like the look of it so far, here's a few things I noticed:

- The tiling on large sections of rock is very noticeable.  It stands out a lot in your last image of the lighting mockup particularly.

- There doesn't seem to be a light source for the tiles, but rather ambient light from all of the empty areas directed at the walls.  I've kind of seen this done in games like this before though, so maybe that's what works best.  :-\

- I know the rocks have been mentioned, but in addition to their orientation, I think you need to vary their sizes a lot more.  Overall I like your higher-res graphics more but your rock sizes were actually varied more in your original low-res image.

Better?  I think it is, but my eyes have failed me in the past.  :-\

Here's the anvil shape I intended; just a primitive basic shape:

Nonetheless, I've changed the animation to a more common shape people are familiar with:

Thanks, here's an update:

I redid the anvil a bit with a simpler angle, so it looks a little better.  The swing is supposed to be from a heavy hammer, but I agree, some parts seems like a heavy hammer, and others make it look light.

The blacksmith is also a she actually, but definitely not the typical overly feminine RPG girl, so it's hard to tell without any context.  She's wearing a long skirt which is a little tough to animate, but other than that she's wearing some basic work clothes and has medium length hair since she is a blacksmith after all.

What do you think?  This took way longer than expected, but I'm pretty happy with it.  Some of the animation could probably be smoother in places, but I need to move on to other things.  Just wanted to get this out there and get some C&C on it.

Pixel Art / A boy and some cave rocks
« on: February 04, 2014, 05:27:04 am »
Hi there, new here.

I make games and need to improve my pixel art so I'm looking for some super harsh critique.  Here's a boy giving the player his "shiny rock" he found in thanks for rescuing him, which is actually a stat increase item.  Also here's a cave wall WIP.

I wanted a big wide grin for the boy but it's hard to see at 100% size so any suggestions there would be much appreciated.  The rocks are going to be a tileset with kind of an angled top-down view, which is proving pretty difficult.  Probably not much to critique there since it's a WIP on the angled parts.  I'll be sure to update it when I complete more of it.
