Pixel Art / Main character walk animation

Like a lot of poeple here, I have been making a game for a bit. Now I've made a start to the main character's walking animation. It's my first walk animation as far as I can remember. I've only animated the legs so far.
Before I add animation to the rest, is there much wrong with what I have right now or the character in general? The whole thing doesn't seem to read well below the knees.
I can see some (possible) problems already:

-The right hip may be too far from the center of the body.
-The arms aren't of equal length.
-The character appears to be too dark against light backgrounds like those of this site. Some details are pretty much lost.
-Neither foot is touching the ground on frame 9.

Here is a sprite sheet of the various parts drawn on top of each other, from bottom to top. the upper row is a mockup of how it should look.


Any thoughts?

Messed with the knight a bit:



I wanted to try and make the ball a bit more defined, although it went a bit cubic in the process.
Also I'm not sure how the shield was lit, it looked rather weird.
The rest of the changes are mostly trying things out.

As for the vampire, it looks fine to me. I don't know what is going on with the sorcerers robe though.

I think the limited palette ones would look better if you used the darkest blue rather than the mid-tone, since the character lacks depth otherwise.

I don't really prefer either, by the way.

Mostly tried to mess with the colours. The ones I used may be too dark for the context, but then we don't know what backgrounds this will appear on. Could you give us some examples of backgrounds?

My edit is far from perfect though, with the coat being messed up, the coat having a tangent that makes it look odd and the hair not shaded right, but the sprite is more readable (at least for me).

Also, if the black outlines are important for the style, why are parts of the arm and coat outlines coloured?

The gradient isn't really helping, and is also responsible for the mockup having 88 colours. It also messed with the colours of the middle coin.

As far as colours go, I think the colours overall are a bit too light. The main grass colour and the sky colour are very similar except for hue. I noticed desaturating the sky and increasing its value makes the mockup read better.

As a last thing, the slime seems to be too far down.

It doesn't really look much like a walk cycle, with the falling over and 180° head rotation.

As far as proportions go, the parasaurolophus' legs are a bit short is lacking a snout.

-Lowered the wings and made them thinner, which I think helps with perspective.
-Separated the body from the wings.
-Coloured the outlines a bit.
-Tried to apply a bit of texture to the wings and messed with the tail a little.

Do you have any other assets for the project already? You'd probably want the (lack of) outline to be consistent. Since the project is 3D, does it use models for other characters? If so, you might want to check if outlines would work with the style they're in. If you do use an outline, you can at least bring some of the darker colours into them.

The dirt looks rather noisy, with the extra shades being unnecessary in my opinion, and the light brown clusters being so jagged.



I don't think my edit makes it look like dirt that much, but it looks a bit cleaner.
Neither the original or my edit tile very well though.
