Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Character for a Platformer

Although those dark lines don't look natural, this does remind me a lot of those grid-like early 80's "futuristic" scifi kind of graphics (which were usually generated i think).
I kinda like it

Thanks for the feedback.
The mounts are just some rough ideas and far from final. I found most of the animations quite easy to make as they just required dragging some things around and redrawing the arms, but for the duck and push ones simply relocating things didnt work. I'm not quite pleased with the results of those two, so i was hoping maybe someone can point out a few things about those?

Thanks for the advice on the bird, I'll see if I can come up with something that looks nice.

I would also like to make a lizard mount (something like the first one) that walks like a komodo dragon with the outward circling leg movement. Since its a side view i'm really unsure about how this kind of movement can be represented. Make the leg larger when its closer? Highlights?

The contrast is definitely better. I think the front legs seem to miss a key frame or something, hind legs look a lot more fluid.
I cant give you much advice as I have never tried animal walk cycles before but since I'm planning on making animal mounts for my game this topic might come in handy later. I'm interested to see how this piece will improve  :y:

Pixel Art / platform character and need some help with bird

I made a few animations that I would like your opinion on.
I dont have time to convert them to gif right now, but will try and do so later if it helps (any recommendations on what program to use to quickly convert them?)

walk

run

fall asleep

breathing heavy

breathing normal

duck

push

jump

fall

old mockup gif

I didnt spend a lot of time refining these yet, and I particularly need some advice on the duck and push ones since I have most trouble with those.

I also had this idea to make mounts and I would like some advice on a feather texture for a large bird. I didnt really try things yet, just made a very rough version

Any critique or advice would be much appreciated

I think you should make the floor a bit darker and perhaps include some of the colours of the floor in the wall or vice versa to make it look more like they belong together

Pixel Art / Re: 8 frame walk cycles in 2.5D fps - could it work?
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:36:56 pm »
fps stands for first person shooter, so the answer to your question would be no, third person shooter on the other hand..  :P

But the smooth walk cycle combined with not so smooth turning is an interesting thought. If you were thinking about mouse-aiming perhaps you could have more than 8 possible directions (at least for the gun/arm) since shooting at an angle will always look a little weird.

EDIT:
Scratch that, i was mistaking 2.5D for the 3/4 rpg perspective. My bad.
Still there is no law that says you cant have more than 8 possible angles

About the scaling: be consistent. If for example you scale your sprites and assets to make one pixel appear as a 2x2 square on the screen but the characters can still move by 1 (screen)pixel it will look weird most of the time. The smallest possible movement would then be 2 pixels on the screen.
Some games still allow the camera to move freely without taking the scaling into consideration though, which can look very smooth

These two tutorials were very helpful for me to understand the importance of colors (and things like saturation) better

Man that looks awesome.

I like the new roof variations and shadow.
Theres something about the angle of the sign. I think I like the previous angle better.
Also the shadow of the sign looks a little odd on the wood in that last one, maybe its a little too dark or perhaps is might be the shape. At first i thought it looked flat but I'm not sure, this is very nitpicky though.

As I'm looking at it again I think you flipped the sign but didnt change its shadow yet, so thats probably worth fixing

i think you pretty much nailed it with that last edit. The legs seem a bit small compared to the rest of the body though. Maybe shifting the torso one pixel to the right compared to the legs might help, not sure though
