General Discussion / Re: HD Index Painting in Photoshop
« on: April 20, 2014, 11:23:06 pm »
Haha, no I don't know anybody that has Photoshop (around $500 right?). I understand the process is nondestructive in Photoshop, I just figured GraphicsGale might have a "destructive" equivalent way, since GIMP disables AA brushes when the colors are indexed.

EDIT: Krita looks interesting, like a Photoshop + Sketchbook (the android app) approach. I'll have to try it out sometime.

Is there a way to do this in GIMP? I've been trying to figure it out, but I can't seem to find the equivalent of Photoshop's Effect layers. If not, is it possible to index paint with GraphicsGale? I notice quite a few people on the forum use/recommend the program.

I already know ProMotion can since I've tried the trial, but it's a little too pricey for me right now.

At the moment, Game Maker Standard is free. Luckily I snatched a copy this time. I've bought it twice before and I lost them both to softwrap. :ouch: But now that softwrap was killed, I can use my code on any number of computers I want, instead of losing (now $100) when my old computer died.

As of now, I'm trying to make some html5 with Phaser. It's simple to figure out, but it takes a little time to move from Game Maker 8, and newb level Python.

I assume the "Top Secret" sub-forum can only be seen by members? I think it could useful for some things.

I second the devlog forum. It could be for WIPs, have sub-forums for kick-starters, and new releases that feature pixel art. I think it cut down on the amount of kick-starter topics in the General section. As for a code thread, I think there are better places for that. Like stackoverflow or html5gamedevs.

That sounds awesome tim, can't wait to see what you've accomplished so far.

Thanks for all the work you've put into the forum, and if it wasn't for you and the ramble thread/clusters, I probably wouldn't have learned as much about pixel art as I know now. I'd been reading your posts years before I joined, all of them full of information that you were able to make fun and interesting. Pixelation might be a little different then before, but it has a a great looking future.

Yep diagonals are hard without single pixels. But starting from scratch really helps with understanding clusters.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Giant in lava

This looks like it'll be awesome when its finished. I think there needs to be some highlights on the underside of his armor and his chin that match the color of the lava. I really like the people in the corner, they really help with making the giant's size more apparent.

Pixel Art / Re: Game Character [C+C]

Those look really good! I think it looks off because both the right arm and the right leg pivot at the same time. But the animations themselves look very smooth. Good luck with the game!

Another thing I noticed was, you can use a lighter color to do the "staircase" effect on diagonals to trick your mind into thinking its a single pixel outline at 1x zoom. Almost like a sub-pixel, where you have to think of making a bolder lighter line to make a thinner darker line in animation tweening.

I think the technique works really well, and I would suggest trying it first from scratch, since you have more control over the final outcome. There were a few places where single pixels would help, but it makes it easier to change areas of the same color with the fill tool. At first I thought this would only work with realism in pixel art, but with more practice I think it would work in more stylized approaches too.

I feel good about the outcome and I think I can see deeper into the structure of what I'm working on. I can spot single pixels easier, and banding pops out more when doing this. So I hope more people post some of their work since it seems like the thread is becoming a little off topic. I also started out thinking it wouldn't be good for anything but realism, but I think more people trying it out for themselves will make this a technique worthy of the ramble thread. You just need to step out of your comfort zone to be able to see it yourself.
