General Discussion / "Clean"
« on: August 15, 2006, 12:25:05 pm »
This may sounds really dumb of me, but what is Clean in pixelart? or perhaps more importantly, what is Messy?  i seem to get both words said about me for works that i see as more or less the same, and in fact, sometimes one person tells me a work is very messy and another very clean...

but i dont know what either actually means?  I thought like in traditional art clean ment tight and messy ment loose, but where nearly every pixel (every final pixel) is placed with real thought, that doesnt really apply?  i know this sounds kind of dumb, but perhaps someone could explain this a bit better so that when people tell me to clean something i know how?

Pixel Art / RPG Face
« on: August 14, 2006, 09:35:50 pm »
Total time: 1:47 (i.e. very fast for me)
Size: 64x64

the finished portrait, debating a background change:
*updated the nose region with lighter shadows

or

the question is, if a game were made with faces like these, would people enjoy the look?  what changes should be made?  ive included almost the entire process for examination

crits and concerns?

trying to make myself get back into another project, its just a trite little tactical RPG character.  this one happens to be my character annabelle, who is also my current avi.

if it looks dark, its because that lightest gray = white

nothing fancy, just trying to get down a realistic face.  sorta failing though, perhaps someone could help me out?  i included a gif of the progress since the problem i have probably lies in the process, and not just the finish...

Pixel Art / CotAW mockup
« on: August 06, 2006, 01:02:27 am »
something i did while i had artists' block on my other 3 projects.
New-------------------------------------------Old

Done with the GBA in mind (and therefore practically 0 restrictions as the pixelart and tile assembly goes)

Any crits, or better yet, suggestions? its an early mockup and done quickly, so if something got cut off funny in the assembly  its not worth pointing out really, i can already see at least one place where i forgot the transiton tiles

in case you cant tell, its all 16x16 tiles on an 8x8 grid but in quite a few places they've been cut into 8x8 for more interesting placement

General Discussion / clueless

im going to create a common situation:

bright-eyed young game desinger comes up with an idea.  feels he could make it work.  does a lot of design work.  starts putting a team together to work for free.  team slacks off, work stops, nothing ever comes of it.  the end.

now, heres a slightly different version....with the same ending:

bright-eyed young game desinger comes up with an idea.  feels he could make it work.  does a lot of design work.  starts putting a team together for what will 'be sold one day far away'.  team never finds a way to actually produce the game even though they have the motivation to build it.  work stops, nothing ever comes of it.  the end.

my question is, how would a regular guy go about publishing a game?  its a simple question, but i dont actually know.  i would assume that the team that worked on the game would put as much as they could together, and then pitch the idea to a publisher?  how would one get a publisher's attention?  and what then?

this is very noobish of me i know, but i figured id ask the group since there are a lot of experienced people here.

this is not pixel art, it is hand-drawn and reduced, but my question to the group is, does it look ok? (ignore the fact that it is for the moment colorless).
this method saves a huge amount of time and i actually am quite fond of the appearence myself, but others may differ, so i was wondering what the rest of the world thought.  directed mainly at those posessing an LCD monitor, not a CRT one, because this project is headed for the GBA
ill probably end up not reducing it by so many colors next time but this is just a test run

Pixel Art / Strategy Battlegame
« on: July 31, 2006, 04:59:53 am »
Well, just for fun, ive started work on graphics for a strategy battlegame with a Low Fantasy setting, for when i get artists' block working on other projects...

so here are the sillohuettes for one race's basic units (no characters or monstrous creatures in this set yet)

rider - horse - page (noncombatant)  - swordsman - axeman - pikeman - halberdier - archer - cross-bowman - standard bearer
mounted page (noncombatant) - horseman - horse archer - mounted lord knight - lord knight - lord
lancer - lanzeritter - mounted standard bearer - falkeritter - mounted lord

crits on the shape would be much appreciated, especially on the shapes of the horses.  also, if you cant tell what a weapon is supposed to be, please tell me (lord knights and the lord himself carry greathammers)

if you are wondering, i do plan to have magicians, but they fall under the category of characters and are therefor not on this sheet, nor are rare mounts such as pegesi, griphons, etc)

5 points if you can name the poem the line is from
2 more points if you can name the author
3 more points if you can name the popular television show that once featured a place by the same naem as the poem
5 points if, at any point during the poem, even just for a moment, particularly in book one, you took pity on Satan

and now, for the actual pic! :P

tried to see what i could do with 5 colors, and im actually pretty happy with how it turned out.  any crits would be greatly appreciated, though it already took me two hours and hes not the prettyiest of people

note: originally planned to have beelzebub behind him, since he is the one that actually says the line, but it didnt fit well unless i moved satan over and i didnt want to.  does it hurt the composition not to have beelzebub there and satan smack dab in the middle? probably.  if people want him there i might do a second version.

general position and lighting of the lord of the flies :

what do y'all think?

i had a temporary block trying to work on a project, so i just started playing around; i kinda like it.  plan to animate it for practice.  inspired by ahruon, orkimedes, and the recent demon's crest critique.
