Superb art direction. Slick & classy.

I'm very close to making it happen. I'm working on my game since a year, but I want to polish things before publishing something, so your feedback will be as helpful as possible. I think about it everyday so don't worry, it's not forgotten and will be really helpful !

General Discussion / Re: Typical Dimensions for a Pixel Art Game
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:03:26 pm »
• It depends of the platform you're targeting (mobile, consoles / PC ?).
• It depends of the aspect ratio you want (16/9, 4/3, or more exotic ones)
• It depends of the look you want (low fidelity / low res or high-res like fighting games)

Overall, today most screens aspect ratios are 16/9 or 16/10.
The standard screen resolutions are 720p (1280x720) or 1080p (1920x1080).

So let's say you want your pixel art scale 2:1
Then your target 1080p.
Just take the resolution and divide by 2. Examples :

Pixel art scale 2:1 on 1080p
960x540

Pixel art scale 3:1 on 1080p
640x360

Pixel art scale 4:1 on 1080p
480x240

And so on. You have to "guess" what are your needs, if your art style requires a lot of details or if the low resolution look fits better what you're doing. You probably have to make a full image, then check it fullscreen at different zoom level (x2, x3, x4) and select what is the most appropriate considering your game design, your capabilities, your art style, etc…

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Betrayer (sci fi portrait)

Well, I feel dirty and cowardly,
[…]
I've taken the easy route and tried to imitate.

Don't feel like that. This is totally ok and part of the learning process.
Actually, I don't know any artist born with such knowledge.
Everybody just study from reality / photos / other drawings.
When you'll feel comfortable enough, then you will be able to rely a little less on them, and more on your brain.

General Discussion / Re: The Cyberpunk Jam !

Oh thank you alldapurps ! You're one the few who gave us a few bucks, really appreciated ;) The amount has no importance and 3$ is pretty huge for such a small game ! Give me your email in PM so I can send you our real game later ;) Behind Nowhere is likely to be delayed because of the tremendous success of The Last Night, we are working on a extended version featuring a famous artist ;D

TheBombSauce : I agree with the gameplay being very rough. Obviously in six days I was severly limited by what I could code. No vertical gameplay, poor AI, no walking humans, etc… We are definitely doing something a lot more complex & refined for the real game coming later this year.

There is definitely some stretching ;)
We didn't have the time to iterate  / refine any sprite for the game jam, we made it in only 4 days.
Our small game will be out tomorrow.
Neirda is my awesome little brother by the way =)
