the sub-pixel name refers to movement, youre making the thing look like its moving less than a pixel through clever use of colour. say you have a solid colour 16x16 red square on a white background. think how would a computer would redraw this square if it was moved .5 pixels to the right from its current position. it would use lighter colours to blend the edge of the square with the white bg. only using the solid red and white colour only gives you full pixel movement

yeah thats what ive always thought of it as, anti-aliasing frames together. blur is kinda similar though, sometimes blurring between frames can achieve a similar effect without proper AA

i removed detail in the nose, gave him a more robust jawline and made his eyes a bit angrier, amongst other little tweaks

i dont watch/read beserk so i dont know the character very well and my edit might be bad, but to me thats closer to the dude in the google image search i did :D

The style is a bit cartoonish in this pic but the motion is on point, for example, if you follow this, your final product will look something like this:



you should maybe add a reminder under this gif that its not a full walk cycle

That was an interesting read, he definitely made good some points about animation and the layman's perception of pixel art. I think its probably true that if you want to sell as many games as possible in this day and age, especially on mobile, pixel art isnt the way to go. But id rather sell less and stick with the medium i love, and you never know, theres always going to be the odd breakout pixel art game that does do really well. Maybe one of us will be lucky enough to make that
