General Discussion / Making a pixel art movie
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:23:28 pm »
I made a 1000+ frame, 60fps pixel art animation in graphics gale a month ago, but i cant get a final movie file out of it. saving as an avi does weird horrible things with the colours, and im not sure avi is a great compression type for keeping the lineart clear anyway. saving as a gif doesnt seem to be an option as i cant get the frame rate high enough with gifs. I could export all the frames as an image sequence, put them into another program and make a film that way, but im not sure what program to use that would let me keep the 60fps and also uses a pixel-art friendly compression.

do any of you guys know what i could do?

yeah i see what you mean, not that there werent any but i cant remember any nes games right now where the sprite really reflected the apparent light sources or changing brightness of the backgrounds. I guess theyd have to redraw the sprites for each level. but if the whole game was going to be firey dungeons, it would be an option i suppose. looks good though! feels kind of aztec.

Are you saying that I shouldn't mix dirt and metal tiles ?

no sorry i just meant that although i love the random look of the machinery tiles, there were some dirt tiles that looked a bit random too and it didnt look quite right.

i think it looks great, really demonic. the character doesnt look like he fits there though to my eyes. i think its the lighting on him, the room is very dark with just that inferno for light, it would change the character.

edit> in particular maybe hed look cool if he was a silhouette with flame coloured highlights and perhaps blue shadows, thatd be something id try but im no expert. its tough because you still need him to stand out if its a game.

thanks for the input guys. i toned down the highlights, i also added another shade colour to the body and reshaped the right leg (our right). I then added a little girl trying to give him her lollipop awwww. tried a bit of dithering for the sake of it! Any thoughts?

looks fantastic. i like the randomness in the metal areas, makes it look like some hellish giger machine. id keep the randomness away from the dirt though!

thanks for the replies guys, glad im doing something right! Ive just finished doing some work on MRWH now based on your feedback.

wow stava, that looks great. what did you do to the colours exactly? add more grey but then keep the contrast between shades the same? it looks a lot more realistic than my original, you made me realise the colours i used kind of attack the eyes a bit. The face is really cool, but you made him look mean! :D my guys a bit of a goofball :) definitely gave me some ideas for the face though, like the placement of shadow. i also used your idea for blotchy/dappled skin texture, it suits him really well.

banding is really hard for me to spot sometimes (didnt even know that was the name for it until today), and i dont always think some of it looks too bad when it is pointed out! but you are right there was some awful banding in there that did NOT look good. To my eyes, ive had a good crack at the worst bits, what do you guys think?
