Pixel Art / Re: crit help deciding which character is better...
« on: August 29, 2009, 02:59:40 pm »
His arm really distracts me from the rest of the piece (as did the arm on the last version).  I understand that you're not going for an anatomically correct style, but it's important to understand anatomy at least somewhat before you break it, so that when you change something it will be a rational decision which adds to the look of the piece, not a random mistake.  For instance, his deltoid is positioned so that his arm almost seems to be in three segments, and the positioning of the hand seems painful.  If you slim it down a bit, glance at a few references and convey most of the shape with some shading instead of those lines, I think you'll get a much better result.
I dunno, just my two cents.

There's some fantastic pixel work here, but just it needs some more contrast, and especially some highlights, to let the player actually be able to see and appreciate the skill put into this.  As it is, it looks much, much better zoomed in at 8x where I can see the technique than at 1x, where it looks rather flat.  Here's a (really) quick edit to add some highlights to the face.  Even with such a rough edit, I think it takes on a lot more depth.

2D & 3D / Re: Official OT-Creativity Thread 2
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:19:15 am »
Hmm, I don't exactly know if this counts as "OT" creative work, but I entered some pixel art I had done into a public art competition through my city and I was selected as a finalist! There's pixel art on a public transit bus in my city now.

So for real OT work, here's a folding poster/brochure knowledge map that I did for an imaging course last semester.

I totally saw that driving around town, and I was like "woah, is that pixel art? On a bus?!  Didn't I see that somewhere on Pixelation?"

It looks good so far.  It seems somewhat traditional for the sword's blade to be somewhat more foreshortened in such a pose, but I think that this look is good, too.  It's hard to tell at this stage, though.

It looks really nice; I really like the atmosphere.  Still, the way he holds his tentacles confuses me.  His left tentacle almost seems to be on backwards.  To me, it doesn't look like an organic part of him, if you know what I mean, kinda like he's not used to having/controlling it.

It doesn't look much like a claymore to me, to be honest.  The blade is too thick, and the handle isn't long enough, and it's lacking the distinctive features of a claymore's crosshilt.  Take a look at these pics: http://www.scottishsword.com/SwordPics/Claymore2-2.jpghttp://www.sidhenadaire.com/images/claymore.jpg

My neck aches a bit from looking at his head's position; it's a bit distracting.  I think that if you move he head up and back a bit it will look a lot more natural.  I also have to agree with Mathias that the weapon looks a bit odd, mostly because of the gem.  If it's a sword (which I assume it is) I would expect the gem to be entirely set into the metal, not "glued in" as it kinda looks now.  It also looks kinda big.  I would either remove it or change how it attaches.
I'm looking forward to watching this pieces' development; it looks good now, and I think it'll be great when it's done.

When water falls and foams  it looks white, not a lighter blue.  I think that's what's keeping it from looking good in your eyes; take a look at some of the pics over here; they might help.

I kinda feel like you could do a bit more on the hair; it seems less detailed than the face below it.  Still, the progression of the portrait has been pretty epic; it's been a real pleasure to watch it develop.

Has anyone mentioned Mario RPG?  That was made from models, and it has a nice, clean look.
