Ergh, it's a conspiricy I say. Again, sorry for  basically blanking the thread, not my intention at all. So much rubbish going on at the moment.

Annyway, on the subject of the animation, I'm completely stuck, I tried and edit and failed miserably. Anyone willing to attempt and edit to help the idoit out?

Looks amazing to me, I love the green area of the legs. The slight green light on the breast plate's a nice touch too.

Though I would say that the top half of the image almost lets the bottom half down. Maybe make the arms on the breast plate more squared off rather than rounded to unify it with the lower half? The nearest arm in perticular looks off to me.

Awsome peice in all though, love to see it finished.

Ack, sorry for the delay in replying, college has been manic.

Darien: I -think- I get what you mean, I'll be making an edit shortly, hopefully I've not got the wrong idea :P

Gil: thanks for pointing that out, just editing and it looks a lot better all ready.

legofreak: That tutorial was actually the basis of this little animation test  :) Very helpful on the limbs and all, but due to the small scale of the pixel work I'm finding it hard to get the head to move accordingly. Also the lack of any turn in the head bothers me, my brain's there going 'should be there', though I'm not sure at this size. And that tutorial, as good as it is, doesn't help a lot with the aspect of the head

I'm just currently hoping that if I keep messing with stuff I'll work out what's wrong eventually.

Right, edited version:

Personally I think it's an improvement, but it still looks odd to me  :-\

Pixel Art / Walk Cycle Help?
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:23:47 pm »
A few months ago I thought I'd try my hand at animating a human (although a stylised cartoon) walk cycle. I decided to do a pixel version as, well, I just didn't have to guts to try a full on drawn animation, heheh. Only maybe the second go at animation I've done, so I've still loads to learn.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the movement of his limbs on the whole, apart from he seems to limp a teeny bit where I haven't quite got the 1st and last frames smoothed out yet. Buut, I'm having a lot of problems with the head, whatever I've tried I can't get the movement to look natural, so he's stuck with a boring static head at the moment.

So any help would be very much appreciated, as I'm dead stuck at the moment.

In fact I tried it today, it's not that hard, and you don't need much movement anyway to press that button. Also I use the buttons on my wacom an awefull low, second colour in ProMotion and i can assure that that's not good for the tendon if you do it alot, thumb seems to be healthier.

I don't tend to use the buttons an awful lot, unless I'm using my tablet for browsing the internet. Though I might try to get used to the whole using the button with your thumb thing, I'm not all to keen on the sound of it being bad for your tendons.

Although, that said, I really have to pull my thumb back to use the button and (as I tend only to use the first end of the button) with my finger I can just click. Thumb feels really uncomfortable, might have something to do with the fact I have small, stumpy little hands (as you can likely see in the picture), being only just over 5 foot tall and female.

Very nice, the dead last version is my personal favorite, followed by the first on the bottom line. The subtle washed-out look, but with enough colour to give it interest works very well.

As for the cheaks, what I think is the problem it that you're using 2 colours on the cheaks, to give more blush to the centre of the cheaks. If you want to stick with the hard edged 'circles' on the cheak (which seems to be what you're going for, from the heidi pic) I'd suggest sticking with one colour. (as CrumbBread posted just as I was typing)

wacom advise that you should rest the barrel buttons under your thumb.

I always try but they end up under my index finger 9 times out of 10

How very odd, I find it impossible to hold it like that. Plus, you have more movment in your finger, therefore it's easier to use the buttons with fingers than your thumb.

Anyway, I agree on the whole 'no right way'. Seems to me teachers just get paranoid about details or now the whole 'the child might develop some problem with their hands' thing. Especially for artists, holding a pen whatever way is most comfortable and produces your best work makes sense.

The 'quadrupedal grip' seems to be a lot more common than I though, I've always held my pen that way, and have often been told it was the wrong way. Though that said I do change my grip to draw in a certain way sometimes, if I'm sketching/doing loose work I tend to hold the pen very oddly. Examples follow...

The way I generally hold pens -

The 'correct' way to hold a pen (notice how awkward it looks when I try it  :P) -

And two ways I'll tend to hold the pen if sketching/doing loose work, which look horrific, but are actually more comfortable for me than the 'correct' grip -

So I'd just stick with what feels comfortable for you, if I hold the pen the 'correct' way it feels awful and nearly falls out of my grip half the time.
