Pixel Art / Re: Return of the NINJA!

In the first animation I think she's throwing her leg up to catch the ledge and give herself momentum. I was actually thinking a similar thing, but to be honest was to lazy to do an edit to explain. Readability problems are probably due to the colour restrictions meaning you can't easily put a darker colour on the back leg to shove it into the background.

I think the original hover backside version has a certain olde worlde game charm, but I really like B.O.B's flip edit, as it adds extra interest.

Yeah, not going for much of a realism thing with this one, but still want it to feel 'correct' even with exaggeration and not just throw human anatomy straight out the window or anything.

Think I do prefer the new version, legs seem to have more weight. Now... to work out what to turn it into and practise colouring sprites.

You're actually definitely right on that looking at it again now you've said that, if you even/level out the top of the skull it should help a lot, as it's obviously throwing people off at the moment and skewing the entire thing.

Thanks to both for your comments.

I had a go at reducing the speed the foot comes off the ground, not sure if I like it better or not. Possibly looks more grounded.

If you're trying to express emotion or character in something with essentially dead looking eyes as part of it's design, you might want to think more carefully about it's posing and body language when you do get around to giving it a body to counter for that. Plus even with eyes without pupils, moveable eyebrows etc. giving the eye an aggressive looking shape can help a lot.

Also, I think what people have been trying to point out isn't problems with your rendering (which is impressive and ambitious on this scale) but the fact the underlying structure of the head seems off kilter or wonky in areas, such as the right eye/s could probably do with moving up and to the left a bit, which would undermine your hard work work however well it's shaded.

I remember seeing Souly's stuff about years ago (before I managed to forget I had an account here), some serious progression, great to see.

Better?
I really didn't like the blue sky...
And that horrible dither for the sky to ground...

Edit:
Fucking around with the pallete.
Looked kinda cool so I uploaded it.

I must say I am quite partial to this ^^ version of things, but is all good. The little plug/rabbit guy's an interesting character.

Been a bit stagnant art wise for a while, so hopefully posting a few things will kick me into gear.

1.     2.
1.Something I drew for someone a little while back.        2.Testing Paint SAI, unfortunately trial's now run out :( Good program.
3.                          4.
3.Trying to emulate pencil drawing in Painter IX      4.Probably too much listening to Tool, trying to emulate 'real media' in Painter again.
5.
5.Older sketch I threw some colours on for practise with colour (don't do it enough).

As you can see, somewhat schizophrenic on style but tend to switch a lot to hold my (currently abominable) attention span and try and avoid the overly perfectionist's disease of detesting everything you draw.

Some really interesting stuff in this thread, interesting to see peoples no pixel art and how different a lot of it is.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Walk Cycle
« on: July 25, 2008, 08:16:55 pm »
Finally got around to rediscovering that I do indeed have an account here and that I did have a WIP pixel going may moons ago.

Anyway, was having major troubles with getting a walk cycle to flow smoothly back then, so messed about with it today. After having requested The Animators Survival Kit last Christmas think I've got a better handle on things, but staring at things to long messes with your ability to judge correctly.

So, before I start detailing things, am I just imagining the back foot 'dragging' (for want of a better word) due to troubles with it previously, or no? Or anything else that can be pointed out/critiqued I'd be very grateful, as this is my first attempt at animating a sprite, or making a sprite full stop really.

Edit:  New version -----vs----- Old

General Discussion / Re: Can your parents draw and how is your eyesight?
« on: December 22, 2006, 07:12:43 pm »
Eyes used to be freakishly good, I miss that. I now wear glasses all the time, they're supposed to be just for close work, but if I don't wear them I get headaches and every thing's slightly blurry, have done since I was about 16-17.

Mum can draw above average I suppose, took GCSE art, Dad can't even draw stick figures. As for the rest of the family, as far as I know, only 1 of my uncles is artistic, everyone else can barely draw a smiley face.
