Pixel Art / Re: In Christ's Care[speed pixel](from reference)

Pshhh, I don't talk to traitors who emigrate to pixel joint.  :durr:

lol jk but if you do stick around here, we will expect you to improve. Some will disagree with me, but if pixel artists were like Shaolin monks, Pixalation would be like the monastery for disciplined training and Pixel Joint would be like the silly shows they put on for tourists.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to submit this toilet to an art festival under my secret identity...

You don't need to shade every space to make sure wherever they're standing looks perfect with the blades of grass that are there. Where does that idea even come from?

I appreciate you for keeping me in check TPoe ;D I honestly need to be called out on my BS lol

Here's my angle:

If making a game for profit, one has to consider return on investment, diminishing returns, and just-noticeable differences.

Perhaps from a programming standpoint there is no tangible difference in workload between a sophisticated asset or a simple asset.

From the standpoint of time spent on the art, however, there is a difference. The typical player is going to have a threshold for what they notice. After a certain amount of detail it will take exponentially more time to make a noticeable difference the viewer will never notice. In other words, unless you're cooking a meal for chefs, nobody is going to notice anything extra unless it's missing or wrong. Finding that balance of just enough is key for efficiency. This is how the masters of the past did it. Just the right amount of pixels. Not a pixel more. Not a pixel less.

Less blades of grass = less time spent creating asset.
More blades of grass = more time spent creating asset.

When creating art for art's sake (this is my camp btw ;D) all of this conjecture is irrelevant. I'd argue catharsis is the highest purpose for this category. So time spent on an aesthetic piece becomes more of a measure of therapeutic dosage than an measure of economic viability.

Our time in this world is short. Will we use it to create art assets or art liabilities?

Arieth, what is your next step after this scene?

If you're gonna trace, do it properly ;)

1.Set the original reference on the first layer.
2.On the next layer, go over with single color splotches, a 3x3 brush will work well.
3.Then on top layer start to give volume with shade and highlight colors.
4.With this rough trace, delete the reference, flatten the layers, then refine with pixel techniques to optimize pixel usage.
5.Finally, fine tune the colors to be optimal in a limited palette.

If you try to go to step 4 first after doing a color reduction on the reference, it honestly looks terrible.  :'(

I used to try to take shortcuts similar to you. I would end up with messy conglomerations like this:

In the end, I was only ripping myself off. It pays to do it from the ground up on your own canvas. It is far more rewarding, you will develop your skill, but not only that, it will look better, too.

I prefer the less cluttered first one because it would be simple to implement into a game.
But, if you are just making a one time scene, the second intricate one is better.

I sort of grew an aversion to all sorts of new tech coming out, and consequently now seek out classic/vintage/retro stuff as much as possible.
Welcome hANshOTtH3RD. You've come to the right place.

Also, I've become more & more interested in recent developments in the healthcare industry the past few years, as I seem to have acquired some bad luck, and various accompanying medical problems.
Me too. Had influenza B on Christmas, lasted a few weeks, then as I recovered I was diagnosed with diabetes, then a week later I got a blood clot in my leg! What happened to you, if you don't mind sharing?

I've also taken more interest in business+investing news, from my various attempts in business/efforts to build a carrier for myself. ...I've also become more aware of the international goings on. ...basically I like to watch the news!  ...and I also like pixel art! ;D
Very nice, are you following any particular organizations?

I have already released a JRPG (made with RMMV) and a Danmaku (made with Unity) on itch.
!!! do you have a link so we can see ????
Welcome aboard Frelon-K! Cheers! (What's your drink of choice?)

Itīs my favorite way to spend my free time, I really love this. Hope to find here new friends!! Thanks!
I too am here as a hobby. Nice to meet you Riky!  8)

I am digital marketing Expert.
:o Can you help me get exposure?

I decided to stop being afraid of failing at art and try to really learn and push myself to my limits in the hopes of making my future projects look like the games I've always loved and wanted to emulate, so I grew myself some courage and started learning art.
Pleasure to meet you Gypsy! I can respect facing your fears. This is a noble purpose.  :y:

I have used other community/forum that why I know the rules and regulation of a good forum.
Hello MS Dave, which other forums have you been apart of?

ive been pixeling for about 7 years technicly (started when i was ten making a few small rpgs).
Hello emmaoisa  ^-^ do you have any of your old artwork you want to share?????? Welcome!!

michael vicente, I'm a 3d artist for the video game industry (I work at blizzard). I also like to draw a lot, and I want to improve in pixel art. I'm trying to make an isometric side project (zombie arpg haha so original), so I'm looking forward to feedback and improve.
Hey Michael, nice to meet you. Do you have inside scoop on the new Diablo? Are they going to fix the inventory system? :p What is your side project all about?

Another interesting point is that I managed (or something managed) to unblock my creative block that I got in the lately high school period... Before that, I was writing, drawing, creating little movies, and doing pixel art and animation! God only knows what happened (something like social pressure they call it) and I got into the role of perfect student until my engineering degree. But last summer (2019) I unlocked my creativity! And ever since this time I'm drawing everyday, creating wooden sculptures or random objects, 3D printing, painting in every mediums... And now coming back to pixel art and improving my programming skills (as I learned C/C++ in quite good level in school, and a little bit Java and python)

I'm looking for any advise to help me reach my goal of being a good game developer. And also free for some work on projects if my skills fit! You can see a bit of my lately creative explosion on Instagram @palo.poli.art (I know I should go on DeviantArt, or even Twitter, but anyway this insta is just the beginning of showing myself with confidence)

Hi Thomas! I know what you're saying about unblocking creativity. I went through a period where I completely did not respect the creative process at all, thinking it was foolish compared to "real work" or so I thought. I took it way too far, in fact. I told somebody very near to me that their art sucked, which I now feel really bad about. They deleted all their art  :ouch: and it was an eye-opener for me, first at how much of a jerk I was, and second, how far I strayed from my passions in life: using the power of imagination. I've made some dumb choices and I hope I can become a better person and make up for the damage I've done. Not to mention, I'm so bad and rusty at pixel art it's not even funny! I was always kind of a wannabe anyways. I'm rambling! But anyways, what I'm trying to say is I can relate at how awesome it feels to unlock your creativity! Glad to have you aboard!

 ;D

Hey, I'm curious, what does your desktop / workspace / command center look like?

Here's mine:

Ditch the messy grass. When in doubt, less is more! Chop chop chop. Mow the lawn xD
I prefer the man on the left because he shows more volume. He feels more 3d.
I love the stone age. I like bone-headed caveman and I cannot lie. Great vibe.
You can make the tree feel less like it's just "plopped" there by adding a bit of the roots underneath on another tile. Does that make sense?

I like the flavor.
I'm wondering why you've doubled up the shading directly on the edge of the outlines?
You don't have to be afraid of adding shading onto more of the canvas to build shapes!  ;D

Can you walk me through your thought process on how you decided where to add lighting?
I like the crisp lines.
Just want to see where you're coming from and what you've learned so far.
