Thanks so much for sharing these little nuggets of gold, Henk! I've never backed anybody on patreon, but yours is a tempting offer to break that.

I think it's a great start! Any reason you haven't made it taller? I think the thin lanky feel is an important part of it's design. Just stretching it up a bit feels a lot better:

Probably wouldn't hurt to even go a bit taller, I just brought it to a clean 64 pix height.

Do giveaways bring in enough people who stay to be worth it? It seems more like a way to get a lot of temporary, but ultimately worthless, exposure and a bunch of dead accounts.
I think it would be more effective to instead toss some tendrils out to other platform in the form of Twitter/Tumblr/whatever posts promoting stuff from the feature chests, weekly "good thread" features that aren't quite feature chest material, that sort of thing. Things like that are more likely to get the attention of the sorts of people who'd actually end up using the site.

Yep, we should have been doing that for a while now. We were about to use the pixelation twitter for more than just status; just never got around to it. We can certainly start there.

Nothing new, but my two main inspirations currently are Sword of Mana and Kakurenbo Battle Monster Tactics.

Game: Sword of Mana (action RPG)
Release Year: 2003
Platform: Gameboy Advance

There's a lot of genius going on in the floor tiles here, and the art in general seems to have a precursory knowledge of pixel clusters, so I look to it often as a way modern "good" pixel art games might could look like.

A small but clever trick, palette changes on the walls in this cave increase visual variety.

Game: Kakurenbo Battle Monster Tactics
Release Year: 2000
Platform: Gameboy Color

Mostly just enjoy this game for the gorgeous portrait work. Let me know if you find better 4 color per tile 32x32 portraits than these because I'd like to see them.
