Pixel Art / [WIP] Maze Game Title Screen
« on: May 15, 2013, 08:28:49 pm »

The protagonist is a turquoise cartoon owl with a tuft of green hair. He's trying to get through the mazes to reach a fortress where his girlfriend is being held captive.

This is the first big piece of pixel art I've done, and the first time using such extensive dithering. Looking for feedback on my technique and the composition in general.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Maze Game Tileset
« on: April 01, 2013, 03:19:24 pm »
Hello. It's been quite a while since I've posted here, and probably just as long since I've last done any pixel art.

For a work project, I'm putting together a simple maze game featuring our company mascot. I currently have three level themes with tiles. I'm OK with them so far, but I know they need some improvement - I'm just not sure what exactly.

Sprite/Tile Sheet

Shipping Level

Snowy Level

Sunny Level

Possibly relevant details:
  • I've tried to keep it to as few colors as possible, but in a few cases I used my pencil tool at half opacity. :(
  • The coins and character are currently scaled down from vector, but I'll be redoing them as pixel art later.
  • The game generates maze levels randomly, and the two full-square tiles are randomly placed.
  • I'm open to adding additional tiles to each of the sets for a better end result.

Any feedback would be appreciated a ton!

Edit with way updated copies:

  • No more lame tool-assisted brushing.
  • Character redrawn as sprite.
  • Vastly redone grass/hedge tiles after re-reading this article series.

Pixel Art / [Final?] Platformer Mockup Themed Recipe Card (RC1 - 1/6/10)
« on: December 23, 2009, 05:42:55 pm »
Howdy everyone. I'm working on a recipe card that I want to make VG style. Here's what I have so far:

(Original vs Current)

Info:
  • Full card size: 360x240px
  • Intended print size: 5x3in, with 0.2in bleed and 0.3in margin, for print to 6x4in cardstock
  • Background tile size: 24x24px
  • Foreground tile size: 12x12px
  • Recipe text size: 5px, 1px border and 1px shadow, total height 8px, 12px line height
  • Roughly 24 colors, maybe more, maybe less when done

Inspired by graphics from Spelunky, not sure where I'm going with this other than that. I need to dig out my old Sega Genesis and do some "hardcore research" for inspiration.

I am hating my foreground tiles, so C+C and ideas much appreciated.

(PS: I'll be around for about 4 more hours today. After that, I may not have Internet access until next Monday, so I promise to post updates when I do return, even if it isn't soon. Thanks!)

Pixel Art / Mini Icons
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:39:44 pm »
Hi there. I've been working on some small 16x16 icons for my site that I'd like to share. Most are pretty plain, but there are a few I'm proud of. Feedback appreciated, and you can see the icons in action at http://www.thegriddle.net on the main page and any archive page.

ETA: 2 more icons.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Card Game Sprites
« on: February 25, 2008, 05:00:53 am »
Hi everyone, I'm working on a JavaScript card game just for fun, and I'm working on card sprites and hope to work on other sprites for it soon. Basically it's a math based order of operations game where you try to make a target number using random cards dealt to you. I have some cards that I designed sort of quickly today but I'd like to clean them up, make them fancier but still sort of stylized and simple, and add images for special powerup cards, player and NPC faces and names, and other graphics.

I'd love C+C on the cards and ideas for how to make the graphics and game better. Here is what I have so far:

Updated 2-25 - I made the cards slightly larger and much simpler, but I'd like to make them decorative somehow. Ideas? Crits? Anyone? Hello?

Pixel Art / [Some WIP Some Finished] Fun Puzzle Icons
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:11:51 am »
Hi everyone. I haven't posted in a while, but on occasion I've been making some icons for my puzzle web site. Here are a few of the newer ones, and then I'll get to the WIP part of this post.

Left to right: An icon for Haunted Mirror Maze puzzles, a sudoku icon (thanks to Noadi for the edit she did earlier in chat), an icon for word searches, and a stylized black and white plant icon thing I just felt like drawing, my template

I have had an icon for story logic problems for a while, but it hasn't pleased me. It's not (only) that it's bad pixel art, but I'm guessing no one will recognize the puzzle's grid from the icon, nor does it look cool. I tried enlarging the grid to near the size of the sudoku icon's grid but it didn't work well. So I'm wondering - does anyone here have any suggestions for what to do about the offending icon? I'd maybe like to keep the funky yellow and red colors but I'd honestly be open to ditching them and saving that palette for future use. Any suggestions on it are appreciated!

Epic fail! What now?

EDITED 2/7/08 - I've updated the icon to a red book with a question mark. It's better than the grid icon that I had but still not terribly great. C+C appreciated for the book.
EDITED 2/25/08 - Updated yet again - now the book looks decent - thanks for th help so far :)

tl;dr: That last icon of mine sucks. What now?

Pixel Art / [WIP] Platform Game Mockup

Hey everyone. I was looking through some of the older posts here and was inspired to make my own mockup. Here's what I have so far:

Let me know if you guys have any crits. I'm not very skilled so make sure I can understand what you're talking about too ;)

Pixel Art / Icon Set
« on: March 13, 2007, 01:50:25 am »
Hey everyone. I've been working on an icon set for my website, which is http://thegriddle.net because I wanted a cool icon based layout that worked well with XHTML validity. I like my layout and I like my icons for the most part. The maze one is randomized using php, which I'm especially proud of, cause the coding for that is still a bit new to me. I'm posting mostly because although I may edit some of these, I mostly want suggestions for improvements on icons I make in the future. Anyway, enough jibber jabber (since most people won't read this anyway).

Edited to include mini icons for puzzle, answer key, links.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Isometric Amusement Park
« on: November 11, 2006, 03:37:05 am »
This is a WIP that I'm doing for a friend. It's going to be palced in my isometric city at http://thegriddle.net/isocity/ in the Pirate Cove region. I plan on adding a lot more including some sort of shipwreck possibly with a ride in it, and a midway and a few other 'flat rides'.

C+C appreciated, but I'm hesitant to make really big changes like moving the waterslide or the go-kart track.

TO DO:
  • Finish rides and stalls and such, including beach and observation tower and/or boardwalk and add more horses to the carousel.
  • Add the shipwreck to the top corner.
  • Tweak rides to look better.
  • Detail everything - break up monotony in the grassy areas and road.
  • Tweak palette to be wild, but still fit with the theme of that section of the city.
  • Create animated gifs to lay over the image for various rides.

General Discussion / Game Maker Iso City
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:04:57 am »
http://thegriddle.net/isocity/

I know that historically there have been many GMC forum members here and forum members here that use Game Maker. This is a collaborative isometric link page that was originally for GM users. It's now open to any Pixelation user who would like to create a building to link to their personal website, portfolio, MySpace, LiveJournal, etc etc. You may email me with a building you create ot you may reply here and I will check for entries periodically.

Currently there are 3 nice districts and a 4th borough which is for sloppily made artwork. (I don't expect that from you guys.) More boroughs to come, including a snowy portion, a roadrunner/wile e. coyote style desert, and possibly a Chinatown type area. Or Little Canadia. I'm not sure yet.
