Pixel Art / Re: Is the lineart looking alright?
« on: August 09, 2016, 03:17:01 am »
Well the point of pixel art and what differentiates it from other genres of digital art is intentional attention and placement of each pixel.

Blocking is like doing a sketch in any other form of art. You then have to go back and move stuff around, refine their placement until they're exactly where you want them and are saying exactly what you want them to say. So for instance if your pan is round, you need to clean up those jagged edges and make your pan look round. It's a copper pan? Fiddle with your pallet to get the colours looking like copper and break out some of the high contrast transitions that metal usually has. Is it high polished? Does it have a rough texture? A thick or a thin rim? Go find some photos of copper frying pans and see how they look!

Remember your fire is a light source, and how it will interact with your pan.

Push those pixels!  :D

Finally got on to the client and realised he meant teeth protruding from the top of the head. Not, upsidown tooth. As in the bottom (roots part) of a tooth which has a vastly different shape.

I disagree. Or i should say i think the focus should be on the volume of the thing your trying to portray. Rather then the detail. Forget the texture completely for a moment and see what the birds look like without it. Look at some birds, try to think of them as real animals and how they would look bodily and exist within their surroundings. At the moment you have no coherent light source, or any real sense of what exactly they are or how they move. Get that down then spend some time cleaning up your lines and silhouette.

Also as you mentioned i'd likely start much smaller. Pixeling as a genre is much more manageable when starting at a smaller size. As by the nature of the genre you have to be aware of the specific placement of each pixel, it's easier to do that when you have less of them to keep track of.

Err...

Thank you for the feedback, it was super useful. As was the reference. He's much more lean then the ones i was working from. I was trying to keep some of the bulk of the original reference i was provided with. As for things being round... that's me... It's a habit of mine. I like things to be smooth, even at my own disadvantage at times.  :blind:

Spent a bunch of time today working on this update. I was told the horns are like a tooth upsidedown. Which i assume makes them rounded. But it looks super weird. Going to ask the client.

Did the feet without a reference, regretting life choices. Will probably update them next.

Worked on the hands some more before work. Ended up redrawing them, the (our) right one is giving me issues shading wise. I might set up a lamp when i get home and it's dark for a better reference. Other concern is maybe it's clenched too tightly, i have long fingernails myself and i can't form a fist that tight without stabbing myself.

EDIT: Changed the thread name because beyond anatomy.

This is what I'm working on atm. Would like help with the arms, hands and neck area, and they aren't looking right to me.

I'm currently working in one of my favourite skin pallets, once i figure out all the shading i will be turning it all grey. But i was having difficulties coming up with a functional grey pallet to use cold, so that's why he's the wrong colour.

Same question asked recently.

Thankyou, apologies for redundancy. But yeah, i should send feedback. If two people have asked the same question so close together obvious it's not just me being dumb but an actual problem that should be fixed.

This is probably a dumb question but the fact that it's not immediately obvious is a flaw in the program. How do i select things without turning them into brushes and move that selection around the canvas? Because as it is i can't find any tool that does this, or any information on how to do this in the help menu. And it's such a basic part of my work flow. x__x

It makes the program unusable for me.

Pixel Art / Re: Game Mockup CC

What exactly are you trying to achieve? There isn't much here to comment on. Try making a mockup or putting things in context. Also you don't need to resize the images, the forum has a resize function built in. Just post it at the resolution it's intended for use.

Good to see you back to pixeling. :D

The most obvious thing to me is a lack of consistant light source. You have a pretty strong bottom rightish light onto the skirt, but the skin feels like it has a very mild ambient light and the top and it's sleaves are mirrored with a central topish source. I say pick one and stick to it, and give everything the same sort of intensity treatment.

I hope that made sense i start work in 10mins and have to run. I'll come edit it later for brainfart.
