General Discussion / Re: What's with the double pixel hate?
« on: November 16, 2010, 09:33:12 am »
I don't mean to be a jerk here, but just saying you disagree a lot with someone is a worthless statement that isn't going to add anything to this conversation.
That said, I couldn't agree with him more.
I loathe upscaled pixelart in games, just the fact only half of a "pixel" can be on screen shows a lack of respect for the medium in my opinion. I think if you want something to be twice as big, then take proper advantage of the pixels and make it twice as detailed.
Again, know I'm only speaking for myself here but there is a mathematical beauty to pixelart and I think it's a waste to not embrace it.

But philosophy aside, these forums have a zoom function built in and I think it's completely unnecessary and inconsiderate to submit a piece in anything other than 1:1.

we can only zoom in here, not out.
Just in case you or anyone didn't know, you can zoom out (although not past the point of the original image) by holding the ctrl key. (alt reverts it to the original size) :y:

1:1 is the pixels natural form though. A zoom function is definitely necessary for the process and inspection but I can't help but feel a piece is missing out by being designed as 200%/etc.

I'm just speaking for myself here but I don't think I ever make pixel art with anything other than 1:1 in mind, my point is that we all think about this differently and it's important to keep that in mind when presenting so you can get a variety of advice from people who will look at things from a different perspective.

Don't apologize or take any offense.  If an image is meant to be seen 2x, 3x or 16x, then it should be posted in that size and not left up to the user to resize it.  You're creating art and have the ability to have it displayed in any way you want.

NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR ART!  EVER!
Is it really part of your art though?
It's just a courtesy thing to post things at 1:1 so we can easily view them at the appropriate zooms and offer criticism easier.

Just in case anyone here is ever in need of some inspiration, check this guys videos out.
He's a little crazy but in the best ways, he lives out in the woods in an awesome dome house he built himself (the third floor is a trampoline) but his main project is a giant robot.
He's documenting pretty much every step of the way, you'll see him come up with some clever solutions and how his brain works.

Really inspiring stuff, the amount of videos might be a little daunting but once you watch one you won't want to stop.

Pixel Art / Re: C64 BlueJay

I know this was for a 4 colour restriction thing, but I think the thing this piece would most benefit from is more colours.
The whole tile effect to how things are coloured (see some of Helm and Ptoings C64 stuff) is another dimension of detail and skill that really adds a lot, I feel like it's kinda tragic for a C64 contest to set a 4 colour limit...

That perch will probably end up improving your skills since that bird obviously has some great advice to offer. :)

Excuse the major bump here, I tidied up my room a bit today and later discovered my phones camera can merge photos to create a panoramic effect:

The quality isn't that great but the merging is pretty well done.
I don't have any special gadgets or anything of interest, so I think one pic can cover everything.
