Pixel Art / Re: Touhou Project Title Screen

I might try getting her left arm back in there somewhere.

The thing embedded in her chest is an eye.

This is as far as I can take this piece on my own. I thought I'd bring it here since you guys know what you're doing, and some of you have been pixeling from before I even touched a pencil. :)

Note: I did not pixel the writing--it's the font MS Mincho. However, I did anti-alias it by hand.

I'd like to change her left arm, instead of having it lying there looking dull, but I can't think of anything at the moment. Also, I'm sort of confused how to shade her with such a low colour count (4 colours), although the cartoonish style is more suitable to the game.

The character, Utsuho Reiuji, is from the game Touhou Project.

Pixel Art / Re: My Platformer Sprites / UI
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:37:41 am »
If you're going for a simple anime look, some of my comments may not apply as I tend to clutter my pixels intentionally.

The first thing I notice when I see your newer Reimu sprite is that her stance seems unstable. Try to straightening out her legs and repositioning her head. Also at a glance, she looks very washed out. Try to bring attention to little details that make the character more identifiable. For example, highlighting the red strings in her detached sleeves or the frills of her skirt. I noticed you have a lot of colours that could be merged with other ones or removed too. What I like to do is look at my sprites at 1:1 and ask myself: can I see the difference the colour I'm adding is making?

I don't like words so I made an edit to further show what I mean:

I organized my pallet in a tree-like structure so you can see how I unified similar colours too.

I don't post too often here either, but I felt inclined to post since it's Touhou. ;D

Pixel Art / [WIP] Lucy
« on: January 06, 2008, 11:37:51 am »
Long time lurker but this is my first topic on Pixelation. :)

This started as a sketch coloring experiment of Lucy from Elfen Lied, then I decided it'd be more fun doing as pixel art. Sort of lost her identity crossing over to something more realistic instead of a cartoon.

Eight colors + transparency

The main problems I'm having with are making her expression readable while zoomed out, the volume in her face because it seems sort of flat and boring to me, and fixing her mouth which I've redone countless times but can't get it right. Haven't started her hair yet. Once I give her hair a try I'll get feedback on it then.

A generic mock-up but I wanted to try the palette out.

The tree's shape needs a bit more thought. Think about the general shape of how you want the tree, and how the light will hit it. Here's something to help, although it's not beautiful or complex (like trees) I think it'll serve it's purpose for exaggerated visualization.

Think about fractals and gravity when you're doing the fringe, it looks like someone took hedge cutters to it and sculpted it.

I like the leaves on the tree, it'll look a lot better once you define it's shape. The ferns are coming out good, they just need some highlights and maybe a bit more contrast.

There's a little bit of a perspective issue with her arms, the closer one looks noticeably smaller and the forearm is too long in proportion to the upper half. Move her winking eye down a pixel, it'll look more natural because the eyelid comes down over the eyes not up so much.

Another thing to think about is your light source ask yourself, where exactly is it coming from? This should give you a better idea how to shade her.

Pixel Art / Re: 1-Bit The Strange House

I think the reason it looks a bit weird is because the perspective's vanishing point for the house is right in the middle, and the two roads it appears to be between them (I think the strip before the fork is suggesting this). Hence you get the odd look because of perspective distortion.

This is brilliant, and your color choices superb. My only criticism is the lighting on right wing. The rest of the piece the light source appears to be from the top left, but the wing it appears to be more to the right.

All that empty white space makes it feel deserted, which might be a feeling you're looking for. Adding a dead tree might help add to that effect and make it a little more spooky.
