Hey there pixel people. Just a reminder that entries can be submitted for Pixelween 2007 starting today.  October 29th is the last day entries will be accepted so get started soon!

For more details on the contest please check out the Pixelween 2007 site pixelblink put together for the contest.

This sounds like quite an interesting project for interviewing, but I would highly recommend using actual pixel art over the talking heads so people get a good feel for the subject. I'd love to see how this turns out.

@Helm:  You don't have any English issues at all in your typing and you have a damn good English vocabulary (too good for babelfish  ;)).  If I had to guess, I would have thought you spoke English fluently.

The only way I can possibly see this as a conflict of interest is if Alex takes other people's work without permission or if he spams Pixelation with ads for his product. Other than that, I don't see why people are so offended.

Unless I'm missing something, Alex is an artist trying to support himself by selling his work on his site. What is wrong with that?

General Discussion / PJ Weekly Challenge: Love Machine
« on: February 12, 2007, 07:26:57 pm »
As a civilization we've made great strides, but we still don't have a machine that can give us love. The challenge this week is to create a machine that is made for love.

Rules:

  • Animations allowed but not required
  • 32 colors MAX!  Transparency is OK
  • Keep it PG-13 rated (love != graphic sex)

Don't forget to submit your finished pieces to the Pixel Joint gallery by 2/18/2007.

Updates and extended rules can be found here.

This really is a great idea, but I'm much too stupid to participate.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Fuzzy Dream (8 colors)
« on: February 01, 2007, 08:21:38 am »
I just started pixelling for fun again after a long hiatus and boy does it feel good.  I'm just in the beginning stages of pixelling and I figured now would be a good time to add some fun objects.  I'm also looking for ideas on what else should be going on in the boy's dream.

There's no question that popularity is a big part of ratings. As much as it'd be nice to have detachment and rate on artistic merit people will always bring their emotions into it.

The 300 movie adaptation of the frank miller comic will be as awful as the comic. With my power of greekness I dissassociate him and his terpid fascist fever dreams from anything that has to do with actual Persian War history.

I haven't read the comic, but damn does that movie trailer look beautiful. From what I can tell it doesn't look like much of an historical reenactment... just a fantasy loosely based on an event -- like King Ralph.

Not to mention, the reason why some are higher in the ranking than others, is the time they've been in the gallery. Of course the quicker or earlier you submit something in the year, the more ratings/favorites it will most likely accumulate on average, rather than submitting a stunning piece later in the year. You could say there is a flaw, but most is associated by taste, not by system...in my opinion, of course.

This is indeed an issue for yearly awards, but I didn't want to wait six months to post an item.  That's why we wait until the 15th of the month to post top monthly honors so everyone gets at least 15 days.  Maybe when May rolls around I'll post the link again so all the 2006 pieces get a fair shake.

I agree with what The B.O.B. says:  Ratings are not perfect by any means and everyone certainly has their own reasons for plunking down points. Honestly though, what's the alternative?

Order makes no sense whatsoever. I see lots of stuff on pages teen-to-twenty-something that blows away all the page one stuff combined. Meh.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose... I think page #1 is pretty damn stacked as The B.O.O.B. (ooh burn) mentioned above... big brother, buloght, Helm, miascugh/Peppermint Pig and all the other fine pixel artists that were so callously left out like Tremulant (who had tons of top picks this year), Fool, jalonso, Ahruon, Orkimides, Adarias, Monsoon2D (love the palette), happip and my new favorite pixeller Snake (that new Katamari secret santa pic is delicious).  And that's just the artist lineup on page #1.  So much fun wading through this stuff.

Oh, and let's not forget Ze BOBber's contributions... he took it to the hoop in 2006.

The title says it all... Pixel Joint's top rated pixel art pieces submitted in 2006.

Enjoy and congrats to all the magnificent artists!
