Pixel Art / Re: My first attempt at pixel art
« on: April 15, 2020, 08:24:53 am »
Do more, SirAndres.

This isn't much to go on, for anyone wanting to give you guiding critique.

I don't know about jumping straight to iso as a pixel art beginner. I wouldn't recommend it. Isometric projection has nothing to do with pixel art, inherently. Thus you're practicing two different things at the same time. Focus on PA.
If you really want to up the difficulty, actually render a creature, character, or scene instead of a simple repeating pattern.

I like the palette choice for now - simple grey 5 color ramp. That's perfect for a beginner. You can focus on just value, by using a grey ramp.

Your AA is a little messy, but the chessboard is fine overall.
Let's see what you do next. Maybe some chess pieces?

Hey, Mathcong. Good effort. Here's my quick take -

Mismatched pixel grid issue aside (that's a tough one) -

---Game is called "Slashy Ninja", which sounds pretty action-oriented and violent, but the title screen couldn't be more calm and tranquil, featuring a generic but solid mountain/sky horizon scene. [insert any Bob Ross quote]
I feel this title screen concept and the game's apparent concept clash. (Based on the name I'd guess it's a bloody Ninja Gaiden-like platformer.)

---I think title screens are super important. Gotta be good. Especially the game's title text.
Think of your game's title screen like a book cover - What do you assume about a book if even the cover is boring and unappealing?
A book cover's job is to grab attention and make you want to open it. For small indy games, the title screen often doubles as the primary key marketing/promotional art.

---Here's a super fast edit mainly addressing foreground/background separation:

I'll let it speak for itself, might give you a few ideaz.
Definitely do animate it. I love the bandana blowing in the wind.

Goooood stuff man. You got a nice grasp on perspective going.
You win this time, Gadget.

I need to learn to observe my own limitations better. I'm not Kim Jung Gi. More like Kim Jung Garbage.
Died before making it halfway, had to tap out.

(super secret text: Hold, please. Life on fire.)
I want to do more digital work but I also want to train the traditional skill, pencils, pastel chalks, paints, ink... it feels very satisfying to work with "real" materials and to be independent from electricity and equipment that costs an arm and a leg to get started.
A wild Inktober appears.

The inks are looking good!
Whatcha shadin' with?

here's a couple drooly boiz, not inked yet

I remember the day you re-launched your anatomy annihilation campaign in the Pix Slack server - if you really feel you're stagnating or going backwards, thats a HUGE deal. Try and figure out why. Pistachio and all of us are just casual observers, only your opinion matters.
My biggest thing I notice is your consistency. I'm never that consistent. Definitely a weakness of mine.

New DS1 playthrough? ALWAYS a good time to start a new playthrough.
Personally, I love starting new chars and seeing how far I can get before dying (I once beat Dark Souls 2 without dying a single time - possibly the FUNNEST thing I've ever done in the dark souls world).
Eh . . . the Remaster ($%^*$^%$%$%$%). I was really bothered by the Remaster they released. Could've been SO much more. I admit, I bought a ticket for the hatetrain as soon as it left the station. Still riding it. NEVER GOING TO BUY IT. TAKE THAT, CORPORATIONS!
(super secret text: if uhhh, if you get your new char to a point where you got the armor you like and your char's aesthetic look is in place, gimme a screencap. NO REASON.)

Oh boy . . . highly detailed drawings on cheap paper that tears after erasing a few times. been there done that. it's horrific. Maybe these new-fangled kids with their dang digital paperscapes have a point.
Sounds like you shouldn't render the dragon since you feel that way about it. I recommend taking what you learned and applying it to your next one - as you know, shmancy coloring won't mask a weak composition. If you spend 50 hours rendering, you'll hate yourself by the end. Don't dew it!

Playing too much Terraria at the moment and I was thinkin' bout what cool stuff slimes could do if they had stretchy physics-y abilities. Slimes are kewl!

DUDE YOU'RE STILL IN HERE PWNING THIS THREAD!?!?! WOW
That is seriously amazing. P R O P Z, B R A H

I haven't checked in here in forever and the moment I do you're posting THIS.
That is truly strange!

The death dealer case study. jesus.
Can't tell which is which. Is that yours, on the right? :laughtrack:

Did I post my colored dargon. Well here's a link just for continuity. (what if the gaping dragon was female).
I remember your sketch. Still wanna see a trippy dennisCOLORSCOPE rendering. Your pencil rendition is great. Are you using any little eraser things to make lighter/highlight areas, like the rim lighting on bottom side of forearms, or you're just not penciling there?
If I were you, the most I'd do on paper at this point is ink lines over the pencil. Actually no, I'd do that digitally too - why ruin all that nice pencil (imean I would definitely scan it in BEFORE inking over it so I had a scan of the pencil-only drawing, but still) . . . So if I were you, and I wanted to take the rendering to the next level I'd scan in, and actually stay in black and white and work on the values, since right now it's all rather evenly lit, darken the trees up, darken the ground up, make the dino pop, etc etc, just my thots.
