Pixel Art / Happily (isometric buildings)
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:39:28 am »
(Sorry, it's almost 3 AM, so I am not sure how clear my writing is...)
Last summer I was dreading my last year of High School... so I came up with something stupidly happy to keep things bright: Happily. I'm not sure what it is. It's a game idea. A mockup. Practice. It's even a story. I won't bore you with all the fluffy details. Anyway... since it's about exactly a year ago, nostalgia made me start working on it again. I want to make more uncommon buildings...

But first, I want to improve the old ones. I started with one of the houses... but after about... it's been 2 hours now... it's rather obvious I haven't made a lot of progress. In fact, I am quite sure I used far too many colours on the roof by now. I've been experimenting with more realistic shapes (as opposed to straight square iso stuff), but I'm afraid it hasn't been going too well. I'd love some advice on that... and I need some hardcore critique to make this look awesome.

Edit: For comparison, my work file (with the old stuff): [here]

I miss Pixeljoint. I've been on holiday the past two weeks... and when I finally return to the internet...
On the bright side, someone offered to take a look at my Orphica set in Game Maker, before Pixeljoint... went on holiday.

The rocks are starting to look better! I must say I like your style.
As for the castle: I actually really prefered the old palette (but I think that's just me), as well as the old pattern of stones you had on the wall (though that does need work). Anyway, you need to keep in mind that castle walls aren't made out of paper. They're far too thin at the moment.

Challenges & Activities / Re: Hexquisite Corpse Suggestion Thread

I'd absolutely love a sidescroller collab.

However, this is the Hexquisite collab topic =P And out of all the new suggestions, I think I personally prefer the one we started out with; just with different colours, a different theme, and maybe a set perspective to keep it together...

Bwahahaha har, wouldn't you like to know

Or I might turn it into an island that will turn out to be attached to something part fish, part spaceship.

It's great. Just not sure yet what to do with the green thing. Spaceship? Large fish? Alien rain cloud?

Ah fine, one more. 63!
Edit: oh and I will do it very fast! Happy?

General Discussion / Re: scaling

Wrong forum, but I'll reply anyway. Decrease the colour count before scaling (depends on your program how to do that; in Paint Shop Pro 7 I usually set it to a 16 colour palette/less if my palette is smaller): it can't add any colours that way.

Pixel Art / Re: WIP - Isometric Game Tileset - In need of some help
« on: June 14, 2009, 05:56:54 pm »
Zen, what the heck kind of shapes are you using?  Where did those come from?
I think you're mixing up Zack's tiles with the gm grid, which are just guidelines delineating a grid that's 16 up 32 across.

Oh now I get why no one understood me. I was mainly looking at Zack's problem with the tiles not fitting properly on the GM grid, so yes, I looked at the GM grid.

I'm sorry, this is how I see it: the tiles just can't match up on that grid.
Edit: (for clarity) tiles taken from Zack's image, not from my version of Game Maker.

I'm curious now...
