Pixel Art / Re: "Dream Girl" NES character CC
« on: August 19, 2011, 05:49:12 am »
I've just started a new project, so I've been working on the main player character. There are some influences from Little Nemo and Alice in Wonderland, I've been working on various facial expressions. Is everything reading okay? Any crits or recommendations before I move forward with this?

Thanks! :D

Oooh, sounds like a game I'd love to play. This character is quite old-school and cute. Great job so far! I can't wait to see some other stuff in this style

Your worst color choice was the grass. Grass is really hard and I'm still not really sure how to pick the color for it. But I'd also say that, generally, in this piece you don't have dark enough darks so it all looks pretty flat

All greys and no hues make Pype a dull boy
aLl greys aNd no hues make Pype a dull boy
all ...

Is there no hope you could bring a little tint to those white-grey-greyer backgrounds ? bluer skies ... pinker mountains ? ... even if this should all be snow, we should see some blueish shadows, shouldn't we ? or is that something the GBC restrictions prevent you to do ?

Are you serious? This style looks amazing and unique. Not every game has to have insanely saturated color and stuff. This is more subtle.

I really like this one. I'd like to see more and see it in their environments.

I'd say ditch the dithering on the ground and the box. It doesn't fit in and doesn't really look that good generally. It'd also allow you to make your ground clearer

Don't forget that his shirt body and head would move if he's walking, especially if he's doing it as spastically as you have him doing it :).

I just wanted to be careful.
Have an actual critique?

I'm guessing he goes through the forums specifically to look at pixel poon and peen & you disappointed him  ;)

Also, something that NONE of you have done with this hair is make it three dimensional CURLS. This is CURLY hair. That means that some strands will be on top of other strands and cast a shadow. I have yet to see that from anyone on this site... seemingly because you're all so incredibly anti-outline. Outline is NOT A BAD THING. I hate hair without outlines. It doesn't look like hair.

Your hair doesn't really look like hair either  ???

For one thing, I'd suggest getting rid of the black outlines. It makes everything look even flatter than your shading does. While that's your artistic choice, I think it'd look better if you used the outlines to help shade the forms instead of simply defining and outlining them.

Get rid of the black outline entirely. Black outlines look bad and your character doesn't have them, so it makes it confusing. Use the kind of shading you have on your character to create forms instead of outlining.
