Woah, especially the first one is way too good for just "some study" ;)
May I ask how heavily it is referenced? I'd like to know since I always wonder how much those who are actually able to paint reference when they do so.

Long time since I've last been active here!
Didn't achieve much in the meantime, so here's some semi-quick pixeling I did:

and a test with different colours:

whoops mixed zenith with horizon :D

And now I realize that I not only mixed these words, I also didnt read what you wrote about the shading of the eyebrow properly...

So I only have 2 minor things to critique:
1. The lower side of the eyebrow seems a bit too bright considering the amount of light it would receive and the brightnes of the shadow it casts.
2. The aa on the ear seems a bit too blurry here and there compared to the rest of the very sharp lines.

Woohoo, yet another great piece from you.
About the shadow of the eyebrow: if the only lightsource is the mentioned sun, then the clouds and most of the shading that has been done is wrong. So I would rather think about moving the lightsource, or placing the scene in an universe with 2 suns :)

I dont think you put as much attention to the volume as you should. To me the detail on the upper part looks overdone and makes it flat. I mean it looks more like a mask with bumps than having the real form of a head.

What looks strange about the colourramp is that you shift to a certain hue and then change direction. You start at 243° (at the brightest part) and shift to 236° (the saturated blue), which is a shift from a colder highlight to a warmer shadow, which is not that common but can work. Then you shift back to 312°.
Here is a little edit that has a more straight forward ramp:

This is not the way it has to be done, I just wanted to show this as an option ;) Also as the ramp in the edit still crosses 240° its still perceived as being warmer in the darker regions.

I dont want to be nitpicking but how is this steampunk related? If it's supposed to be steampunk, maybe you should add something that could exhaust steam in a way ;)
