Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#162 - Lithone 2005
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:46:52 am »
A very early WIP, but I'd just like to know if I've committed any obvious cardinal sins in terms of composition before I go along with this.

General Discussion / What's the current state of pixel art?
« on: January 09, 2014, 03:51:50 am »
I've only been aware of pixel art as an art form for a few years, and I don't really know much about its modern history. Some of you who have been doing this for 10+ years may be able to answer some of my questions.

- How is pixel art progressing? Is it a lost art form, where we're still trying to understand the old masters of the 90's and early 2000's? Is it losing popularity? Or are the best pixel artists today far more skilled than yesterday? Is there kind of a ressurgence thanks to indie games lately?

- Is there any change of paradigms? I've read a short account of pixel art history written by Helm, where I gathered that there was a sort of consolidation and consensus-gathering on what pixel art was when Pixelation started, with rather strict definitions of what constituted pixel art, but that pixel art today has grown in different directions with more acceptance for different styles. Is that an accurate understanding?

- Do Pixelation and Pixeljoint form the Mekka of pixel art, or are there major pixel art scenes elsewhere, such as in Russia or East-Asia, that aren't easily accessible to westeners?

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#155 - Experiment with Colors - Shading
« on: January 07, 2014, 11:28:39 pm »
Hey guys, I'm doing some colour experiment that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm trying to figure out how to work with complementary colours, in this case trying to work with a colour scale with both pink and green. It's something I've noticed other people doing for some time, but I don't really understand how it works. I've read up on color theory, and I understand how people sometimes use complementary colours to neutralize each other, but it seems like there's a lot of art that uses complementary colours to just give more depth and interesting textures.

Here's what I'm working with.

Maybe it needs higher contrast, but I'm afraid the saturation will burn people eyeballs and make it harder to combine pink and green on the same scale.

I'd happily receive C&C regarding the shape of the head itself, and my pixelling technique, but I'm primarily looking for advice in regards to my use of colours. I'm hoping to avoid a normal linear colour scale from a cold and dark to a bright and warm shade of purple.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Scrolling non-shooter game
« on: January 02, 2014, 05:41:34 pm »

Hey everyone. It's been a few years since I posted here. Don't worry about it - it's not you, it's me. Anyway, I've come crawling back to ask for your C+C.

This is all very WIP, especially the interface, the top-down view and the co-pilot portrait. But all comments are welcome regardless. Especially concerning the helicopter sprite, from both angles.

EDIT: I should explain, the idea is to have an old school 320x240 resolution game where you pilot a SAR helicopter (search and rescue). You get both a side view and a top view and they are synchronized, so you have to worry about moving in three dimensions. The objective of the game is to save people, put out fires, deliver emergency supplies, etc. A non-violent version of Raptor and similar games.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Sci-fi scene
« on: September 25, 2011, 12:55:13 pm »
Here's a piece I'm working on these days. I'm open for feedback on any area, but at the moment I'm having a hard time finding the colours I want to use. It's difficult to create contrast whilst still maintaining a sense of unity and tying the piece together. The statues in the background will be fixed, but I'm not quite sure how to improve the girl, except give her hair better texture.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
