I like it, I think it will look great once animated. As for the flatness - I tried a couple of repaints which I won't post since they're very rushed , but did help me get a couple of ideas-
- Try shading the stones so that the center is lighter than the sides, and add strong reflections around the lit area (I used a bright bluish color on top of each stone and a slightly darker yellow on the bottom.)
- Try letting the water seep deeper in some areas , right into the dark outline of the stones, rather than to be completely blocked by it.

I don't think your original chair looked bad, it just has a different style, and works quite well with it.
Here's my paintover of your original -

I didn't change much, obviously - I edited the palette a little (not sure I prefer mine over yours) , and set up a rule which allows only the edges facing me to be highlighted (which makes a big difference to my eyes). I also softened some of the edges (not sure whether it goes nicely with this style).

Another vote for the original.
I think the outline might be a little too dark, you can try brightening it selectively (for example in the form of selout) . You might also want to try to add some light from the back burners hitting the back of the ship. Anyway, it's cool as it is, nice design and execution.

fil_razorback - cool, seems to work well. The interface design makes perfect sense but it has two usability issues- one is that the tiles' movement resolution is the screen resolution rather than the original image's. The second is the size of the work space- it's easy to run out of room .

Good job Lick! Now all it needs is a zoom feature, and it will be perfect  ::)

Actually it was pretty difficult for me, perhaps because it's my first time, but more likely just bad genes.
Here's mine. I'm guessing this will be pretty hard because of the rendering style I used.

I like the style, design and execution , but the motion still doesn't get through very well in my opinion. It feels to me like one of those wobbly characters in a Bill Plympton animation- which isn't a bad thing on its own, but it means that if you're trying to convey a full body motion than you should probably exaggerate it a bit more.
