Wow, that picture brings back memories of a game that I spent way to much time playing and making levels for.  ;D

I made an attempt at editing the legs but it's way beyond what I am able to do right now. I think doom sprites have so many colors because they're edited photos of clay models. I remember seeing the model of the spider mastermind in a magzaine and it looked awesome.

hahah, I like the mario one.  Now someone has to make the mario/zelda game.

I think some of them could be exagerated more.  For example the one with the exclamation point could have the pupils shrunk down to dots to make him look more surprised. The smiling one could have the sterotypical n_n sort've look. This isn't anything big because they look really good as is.

The moving eyebrows are entrancing. I think I stared at them for half a minute.

Hehe, he looks like a crazy carrot thing.  :P

I think shading the teeth and the tongue would give the image more depth. You mentioned dithering and I figure that could help out things with the body.

Hey Helm, your edits are always appreciated. At first I had no idea what you meant about lacking contrast but then I corrected my gamma setting and saw how washed out it was. I'm definitely trying to learn how to make video game art so thanks for catching that.

It's weird how you can decide your work is an 8 out of 10 then you realize what you think is a 10 is really a 5.  :P  I think this looks better. I widened the range of color intensity and added some inbetween colors where it was much needed. Also made some changes to the design. More criticism please.

Edit:
I added the original sprite that I did a few months ago for comparison.

I really like how the background came out, The clouds look nice and billowy.  It's easy to see that you put a lot of effort into this.  If you were aiming to give everything a textured appearance the eyes look unfinished because they aren't dithered.  Good job on the wood also, tis a fine pirate vessel.

I agree about the lines looking crusty.  I've been a Line art guy since forever so I think it gives me the bad habit of laying them in too thick, giving it a coloring book look.

...you're going to finish the colors and stuff, make it more complete right?

Yeah, I'm really trying to get over myself and improve so I'm gonna look at other pixel art that inspires me and figure out how to make this look more finished.  ;D
I got the design and the cool pose stuff down, it's time to work on the weak spots.

I did my best to make this look more finished and cleaned than my previous work.  He started out as a generic looking warrior guy then I decided to give the armor a more insect like look. C+C is appreciated.

It's neat how you used dithering to give subtle shading on the headshot's hair. You did a good job of breaking up any aliasing and the coloring shows a strong light source.

One thing that stands out are the number of colors used. The color count could be cut in half and the end product would look similar. Using that many colors in a sprite this size goes unappreciated because it's hard to distinguish between shades that are so gradual.

hitler edit.

Hehe, thanks for taking the time to do that.  I really have a hard time with colors (been doing nothing but b/w line art for years) so it's neat to see the full treatment on a sprite I made. I'm gonna save it and use as reference.
