Pixel Art / When I grow up I want to be a robot
« on: October 30, 2005, 09:15:27 pm »

I'm starting to feel more comfortable abou the idea of thinking in forms rather than lines on a flat sheet of paper. I also tried out an approach to break down the composition process into smaller simpler problems and I'm curious if anyone else does this.  First I made a pallete out of grey tones so I could focus completely on shading. After it was done I then tweaked the pallete to add saturation and hue. I felt more in control and less like I was driving a race car and knitting a sweater at the same time.

Oh yeah and robots are cool. I use to draw nothing but robots back in grade school.  :P

Here's my walk animation. I have an idea for a dance but I'm going to think out better keyframes for it.

General Discussion / Zoomable Image Script Use
« on: October 30, 2005, 07:59:31 am »
Can I to use a modification of the forum's image zoom script on my webpage?  I would gladly cite credit to the coder/forum. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel or get into the tedium of posting double and triple sized versions of everything. :P

That's awesome!  8)  Welcome to the board.

I don't want this to come across as flattery but nothing comes to mind about how you could improve this.  I get the impression you've been studying a lot of video game sprites because you have solid technique.  Two requests please, share more of your work and animate this.  :P

Pixel Art / Re: Dragon Scene

I like the colors you picked and the texturing you did for the scales.  The main thing that bothers my eyes is that the dragon looks flat. Here's a link to a  book that teaches how to draw with forms to give things a more solid and round appearance.

Don't let the sillyness or how old the book is throw you off. He's sharing some really powerful stuff but trying to make it accessible. :)

Pixel Art / Re: critiques wanted for some sprites

I remember how hard it was to begin with a blank canvas instead of playing around with something preexisting from a game.

They look a bit flat, try to focus on the form of what you're drawing rather than giving it a cutout look. I can relate to it being a challenge, especially when working this small.
One thing you could do is use more contrast on the skin shades. That will help give more depth to the sprites.

Not bad at all for a first attempt at original work. Just keep studying work you like and it'll become more intuitive.  :)

Just announcing my intent to enter. I'm glad the deadline was pushed back because I didn't know, until two days ago, that the contest existed. For the people who have posted entries, really good work.  :o

Pixel Art / Re: Attempt at tiled scenery
« on: October 25, 2005, 10:33:07 am »
Thanks for the feedback. I'll play around with all the tweaks you two suggested. I agree road is way overpowering but was stumped for ideas on how to draw it out cleanly. I'm gonna look at some photos of beaten pathways now on google and figure out how to shove it into little pixels. Is it just me or does the guy look like a rockem sockem robot?   ;D

Pixel Art / Attempt at tiled scenery
« on: October 24, 2005, 12:29:24 pm »

I'm really interested in working on games for portables so I'm pushing myself to draw at that size. My goal was to make something that was easy to read on screen while still being fun to look at. It involved some fidgeting with value and saturation to draw attention to what's important while not letting the background become too washed out.

I'm crawling around in the dark on this because it's new to me. Anyone have basic advice on how to make good tilemaps and common mistakes to avoid? and of course CC please. :]

The armored guy with the gun is really neat looking. I've lately been pushing myself to make smaller and smaller sprites so it's an education looking at your work.

One thing that is evading my grasp is control over hue shifting when shading, which you did a great job on with the blue to yellow on the armor. Do you have a rule you follow to do this or is this something you figure out with your intuition?
