General Discussion / Re: The Official Pixelopolis OT-Creativity Thread

istvan: The "I must be a super hero!" part reminded me of the tick. I miss that cartoon. ;p
Monsoon2d: hahaha, the little head is hilarious. And don't worry about your reputation, you have gained cool points in my opinion I will always remember you for this picture. ;p
Zach: Maybe I'll try pixeling it now that you bring the idea up. >:] And great stuff as usual. The exhuasted guy in the baseball cap looks like how I feel when i'm driving home from work.
Jamie: Studying up on value? I'll do a drive by C+C and say find a drawing 'how to' book to get some info on shading forms. Nice start so far. :]

Friend was talking about big belt buckles so I decided to give her a laugh. If I put him in a fighting game he would be able to use it like captain america's shield and maybe it would have a laser beam thing going when he poses like that.

You're cool for putting all that good information in one place for your friend.  I think it's important to struggle with art to better appreciate what you've learned but I wish there was more practical documentation back when I started making sprites. Looking forward to part 2.  ;D

Did you mean his left hand or the hand on the left side on the pic?

his left hand. Reminds me of an urban myth about doctors amputating the wrong limb. I think they use fancy latin words for left and right side of the patients body to prevent that sort of mixup.  :P

Hey, BlackEye.  ;D

Nice you see you back then.  Doesn't look like you got too rusty because that looks pretty good.  I like the one on the right because it has more contrast. Easier to read the picture.  I like countour work on the hair and your shading on the tshirt.  I think his left hand could be cleaned up, a bit jagged and rough right now.

it's too soon any time earlier so forget about extra shades posters and Helm's compromises, just animate.

Doh, I followed up on Helm's advice before reading your post. I realized  "I want to get better at pixel art" contradicts with "my work is good enough", so that argument is in the rubbish bin now. I don't think I did it right but I hope it's a step in the right direction. I can see a comprimise though. It would be easier to animate with block colors like the first version then make a second pass addingl the texture work.

I appreciate your advice guys.  Every so often what I thought was a 8 out of 10 turns out to be much less when I realized what else is out there.  I will be animating this, Camus, but first I'm gonna finish my entry for Adam's contest.

I like how you did the texturing, looks like marble and wood without being overstated. I think one thing you could try out to make the counter look more solid would involve making the parts of the counter, facing up, brighter in value.

About the edits being too dependent on the outlines, that's my fault. The orignal line art was drawn before I learned how to build things up from simple forms like spheres and cylinders. It would be impossible to give believable shading to something that was drawn like a cut out doll to begin with.  :P

I really like your stuff and I wish you would finish them more.

I've been confused about how my work could become more finished then I realized that we probably have different goals with pixel art.  I really enjoy looking at the pinup and fine art quality work that gets posted here, yours included, but I'm trying to practice composition methods simple enough that I would be comfortable making animated game sprites with, not so much to create images that stand on their own.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Mercury, I do agree about the sprite needing a few more shades. I'm gonna start experimenting with 5 to 6 rather than only 4. It would also help out when trying to pull off the illusion of depth.  I felt so good about this one I've decided on my forum avatar.   :P
