General Discussion / The grass tile - a unsolved problem?
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:54:07 pm »
In the whole time I made tilesets, the most problematic one always has been the grass tiles. Most examples simply don't look good, and better looking games often even avoid them entirely. A textured approach is often too noisy, rendering single strands or bush-like structure tends to look bland, barely better than just flat color. Anybody having a insight on this? Maybe a different approach?

There are some examples of good grass I know, but they are kind of limited on their own.

Jetrel had some very interresting grass for his unfinished RPG project but it depends on a lot of tiles and careful hand-placement of them.

Frogatto seems to walk arround this issue by not having larger areas of grass, only small detailed patches on a very rocky surface:

My own approach is still using flat colors with just a few clusters suggesting grass structure here and there:

If anybody else knows some worthwhile examples of grass tiles please post them in this thread.

Pixel Art / [C+C] [WIP] Typical Tree Thingy
« on: July 20, 2013, 08:54:33 pm »

Yep, some trees, some vague lighting and some sillouhetes. Again. I would love to make something different, but I feel a bit limited and whenever I try to it just doesn't look good enough, being a bit discouraging.
I am not really sure what I want to make out of this, so some suggestions would be great.

Pixel Art / Spill Life - Wood Texture
« on: November 26, 2012, 06:48:01 pm »
Doing something for the current challenge on PJ.

Starting with the background, the wood of the table.

Wood colors are a bitch, these work but I am sure it would be possible to make some better ones.

Currently 11 colors of the 24 limit.

General Discussion / Pixel Art Brushes/Shapes
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:15:18 pm »
Hey folks,
while arround here I noticed that some works seem to make heavy use of shapes/brushes.

Two examples of what I speak of: slym RAMENSHOP

These are quite obvious, but I would guess that a lot other pieces also make use of brushes, more in the shape finding step though.
For example in this picture I had trouble getting some nice shape for the rocks, then I thought screw it and used the calligraphy brush shipped with GIMP, it was way faster and looked better and in the end wasn't really that visible:

Well, my question now is: what brushes do you guys use? ;D

WIP of the desert tileset:

CC is appreciated.

Edit: I actually had finished this one. I just didn't want anymore critique on it so I didn't post it here.

Pixel Art / Some stuff
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:27:57 pm »
Hello :)

First some introduction from myself: I am a game developer and digital artist (oh well not really professional yet.) I started doing pixel art occasionally about 1 year ago and have a background in 3D Art.

Lately I experimented a bit more with the pixels, mainly anti aliasing, shading and color choice.

CC is appreciated.
