Pixel Art / Re: [WIP][C&C] School Girl Sprite
« on: July 11, 2011, 07:32:53 pm »
wow, I really need to learn to use less colors..

I always tend to add more and more colors to the palette.
And for some reason I always avoid bright highlights and dark shadows, which in combination makes the art look dull and too smooth and undefined.

Thanks, I feel like I'm really learning stuff here :D

edit: I also think the reason I end up with too much banding/pillow shading is because I always think that a darker shade have to be next to a slightly less darker shade. And that a highlight can't be next to a really dark shade.. Which I now realize is just making every color fade into the next and removes sharpness and shape..

Also, a selout is supposed to follow the light source right? Like you did on top of his head.
And another question: I always tend to want to use AA on the outlines by making the edges brighter, but I've read that you're supposed to do the opposite, and I see you've done that on top of his head too.

Even with rags you can use a bit of brown and beige, I'd throw in a red scarf just to make him stand out from the BG..

I had a go myself, mostly just to practice :)
I was playing around with shading and changed the light source a bit.

(edit: he looks a bit too much like a cowboy with the scarf now haha :D)

Edit: wow, pistachio, I'm always impressed how you make things look so good with so few colors.

Special tricks... lol

Use your head to make a rectangle... use your knowledge, to make a perfect circle -.-

Tsssssssssssssss.... man

It's all about workflow :P

Thanks for the comments so far :)
Never had the need for a non-square grid actually, but now that I think about it, it would help with sprite sheets.

Wow, thanks that was quite informative.
Something that has been bothering me for a while is that all my work seems to look more or less washed out..
I know I have a habit of de-saturating shadows quite a bit and also using bright outlines.

What you said about pillow shading was spot on..
So I tried to touch it up a bit. :P

(right one just for lulz)  ;D

As for the school girl, your version looks very awesome.
Although she looks a bit like a zombie due to the eyes, or the right eye in particular :D
But yeah, I see your point very clearly.
My version relies heavily on outlines, while yours uses colors and shades to separate limbs and such.
The strong yet selective outline also does a fine job of adding much needed contrast.
At first I wasn't sure about having the highlights in just a single color, but I think it's growing on me, it's sharper and more effective.

(It's funny how much easier it is to criticize/analyze someone else's work :D)

Pixel Art / Re: [c+c] Rock tiles 32x32px
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:47:09 am »
Hm, I think those look great.
I've just done round rocks so far that didn't turn out that great..

The only key to not making it look too repetitive is just trying to avoid anything that stands out which in turn usually makes it look a bit bland.
Smaller chunks might just make it look too busy.
You can also try to make the upper surface a bit uneven, instead of straight as it is now.
So go with a few variations of the same tile.
And although you will notice where it loops, the players will likely be too busy with the whole overall impression.

And those rocks on top do look like tiny mountains. :P

Ah, that makes a lot of sense, although he probably shouldn't be looking over his shoulder like that (looks uncomfortable ;P)
If you just turn his head so you can only see the back of it, the pose will look more natural :)

Btw, for the dash pose, google "ninja run" and check the still images.

I love it! Very dark feel.

The ground does look quite uniform in color though, you might want to add some slight variations, like rust, more bluish metal, lighter gray.
Also, about the contrast, how does that work on a cellphone? Like playing the game outside.
High contrast might be an advantage.

Also, would be cool with more parallax layers, especially for a game focused on constant movement.

You definitely need a 4th frame between the 2nd and the 3rd, also a trail behind the weapon would make it look more like a sword swing.
Also, how come the sword switches hand? :D

Also with the dash, it's like his legs just bend sideways, it doesn't look balanced. I think you might want to make it look more like front knee is bent while the back leg is straight.

And I like the minimalistic style :D
But you might want to remove one shade from his face, because it's a bit too smooth where his jaw line should be.
Almost looks like he has a mask or something on, which might be intentional?

Challenges & Activities / Re: The Line Art thread

This is my first attempt at pixeling (based on dixet_4). Please critique.

I like it, good palette and overall shape.
The pose looks a bit unnatural, even for a robot ;)
I think it's the way the leg to the right bends.. It's like his leg is sliding towards the other and he's about to fall to the right.
For a stable pose I think the foot should point more towards the left and the leg shouldn't bend so much inwards.

Also, try adding some subtle rim highlights to the left on his "chest plate" to make it pop more.
And personally I also like to use slightly brighter outlines "inside" the sprite.

(couldn't resist playing around with the sprite)

1. Original
2. Adjusted the pose
3. Rim highlights and softened the black outlines "within" the sprite.

EDIT: Oh sorry, I missed that the line-art was someone else's.
Oh well, my critique still applies. :P

General Discussion / Pixel art in Photoshop, plugins/tips&tricks?

Hello!
I can't imagine doing pixel art in any other program, the only downside is not being able to make geometric shapes without anti-aliasing.
So you people out there who also use photoshop, do you have any special tricks or plugins that you use?
