Pixel Art / Planets, Stars, Space
« on: February 24, 2016, 09:00:16 am »
Thread dedicated to Ambivorous who really wanted to draw a planet too!  :hehe:

So I'm drawing a bunch of planets and stars for a big space background.

Here I've added in all of the planets and stars in a small image, but I'm gonna focus on the big "pumpkin" planet..
I feel like I could imply the shape of the planet better with the messy looking landscape and clouds..
It all gets so random though, I just push pixels back and forth without gaining much clarity.
Also the shading kinda got lost for a bit, it doesn't look very round..

The tiny blue planet I'm kinda happy with.. Green one, not so much.

And while this is mainly for planets, I also feel like I'm running out of shapes for stars.. So any help here would be much appreciated.

Pixel Art / U-boat Girl
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:27:45 pm »
So I'm trying something I've never done before..
I'm kinda happy with how it turned out, but there are some problematic areas..

I think the hair looks tentacle-ly, maybe if I ditched the heavy outlines?
The hair could probably flow a bit better, I think I just settled for something too quickly.

Also, she kinda looks like a giant with the ship in the background, I'm not sure how I can imply that the ship is further away.
I'm sure there are also a bunch of cluster and shading issues too..

Character Reference

Edit: Split ends to imply hair, better image size and spacing.

Edit2: Bunch of small tweaks, changed the palette..

Edit2: I gotta stop working on this... tweaked sky, changed palette so the water is more turquoise..

Pixel Art / Space Ship
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:45:42 pm »
I drew this for todays #Pixel_dalies on twitter.

I don't intend to finish it, I'd rather draw something new from scratch.
I know it might seem rude to ask for advice when I won't put any more work into the piece, but I need this rule, otherwise I'll end up spending tons of time on polishing, when I really need more practice drawing quick things.
But any insight or edits will still be appreciated, I want to learn as much as I can from this.
The background was a last minute rush and the perspective is a bit wonky and the ship looks pretty short. I could have added more of the green light from the thruster trail(also a rush job) reflecting on the ship.

Pixel Art / Female Link
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:30:00 am »
I made this for the #femalelinkjam, but I'm not sure if it's ever gonna end up as a game, so it's just for fun right now.

Still a WIP, but I want to try and finish a dungeon and the basic animations.

For the sprite I was looking at both a Link to the Past and Minish Cap. The eyes were made in Windwaker style.

Pixel Art / Sonic Items
« on: April 07, 2015, 06:24:51 am »
I've been toying with the idea of making a level mockup for Sonic Game for a few weeks now..
This is the first step towards that.

I've played through all Sonic games last week and made sure to look closely at the pixel art.
Thanks to that I've gotten a lot better at shading metal.
I'm also so used to using outlines for everything, so this is good practice for me.

The Sonic sprite is just for reference.

Pixel Art / Escape Ape [Game WIP]
« on: February 19, 2015, 07:31:27 pm »
Escape Ape (unofficial title)

I've been working on assets for a runner game intended for the mobile market. You might have seen some of the old sprites that I've posted here.
The previous themes never really worked in favor of our game mechanics or what we wanted to do, so we've ended up changing it every other month or so..

It started as a military themed game where you fought some kind of nazi-esque evil army.
Then it changed to a game where you play as a janitor being chased by some kind of bond villain.
After that we thought about making it into a super hero with a huge drill theme..

And now, we ended up with a monkey.. We're just thinking how to spin the story, either you're a space monkey crashing his ship on earth.
Or you're a monkey being experimented on by an evil scientist. Maybe even just a regular monkey escaping from zoo..

Visually this is the character that I've been the most satisfied with, it looks interesting and has more style than the previous ones.
There isn't really any rush to settle for a theme, but there is a lot of stuff that requires the theme to be set before I can work on it.
I have been making a lot of generic tiles and graphics so I'm sure that most of it will go into the game one way or another.

I'm posting here for feedback, since it feels like this could be the theme that sticks.

There are two version, the new one is slightly smaller.
The tail is a bit wonky, but it might look more natural in motion.

And I couldn't resist putting hats on him.. ::)

2D & 3D / Pixel art Skybox in 3D
« on: February 12, 2015, 07:55:58 pm »
I don't have much experience with Skyboxes, I know the very basics about how they work.
I know that to use a photograph for a Skybox you do some Photoshop wizardry to compensate for the distortion in the edges.

But I want to use low res pixel art for a Skybox, so I'm trying to figure out an alternative.
Right now I'm messing around with a SkyCylinder, because I thought I'd minimize the distortion if I used more faces.
I also don't need a top or bottom, so I think a cylinder will work.

I'm just posting to see if anyone with more experience has any tips.

2D & 3D / Low poly Vehicles
« on: November 15, 2014, 09:45:42 pm »
Heavily inspired by Kenneth Fejer, I wanted to do a bunch of low poly vehicles and assets, possibly selling them on the Unity assets store.
With that in mind, I'd really appreciate feedback on this first model, a basic car.

Tris: 102

Edit: Progress..

Edit 2: More Progress..

Edit 3:  Added a tank, it's hard to resist the urge of adding more polys. But it's good practice for faking depth and adding detail through textures.

Pixel Art / helicopter
« on: October 15, 2014, 11:39:31 pm »
So I've been working on this helicopter for more than an hour now and I still don't quite like it..
I've just been trying to work up to the point where it looks good, but I've yet to reach it..

It's missing something, perhaps it's just boring because of the side view.
But it's for a sidescroller so I can't add much perspective..

Pixel Art / Sci-fi Portraits
« on: June 17, 2014, 12:22:12 pm »
Been a while since I've dabbled with pixel art, I made these just for fun, it's for some kind of tactical space ship game. (Which may or may not turn into an actual game.)
I've been studying up on manga style faces, mostly for the mouths which I always have a hard time with.
At first I tried doing the faces at an angle, but it would be too much work for multiple animated portraits with different expression.

I'd like to make more parts of the face to change when they talk, but I'm not entirely sure how.
I'm also not sure if the helmets look different enough to easily tell them apart, I'm thinking of having different colors but that might look messy.

Another idea I have is having a 'near death' state, in addition to the 'wounded' state, where the head is angled down and the eye sockets are just dark.
Here is an animation displaying how it looks when they talk and take damage.
