Pixel Art / [C+C] soldier walk/crawl cycle + spritesheet
« on: December 14, 2011, 07:30:41 pm »
Crawl cycles:

Walk cycles:

I've animated vector graphics before, but never pixel, so if I'm missing any standard techniques or something please tell.
Btw where do you guys upload animated gifs? Tinypic is so annoying with the ad before the spam code!

Entire soldier sprite sheet to help any edits. Also feedback in general is always grand =)

Nice logo, but still I'm afraid preeetty hard to read.

Animation:
Your frames move about too much, making the animation jaggy/skippy instead of fluid. Walking is a pretty uneventful motion.

Southwest walk jitters horizontally
West walk jitters vertically
South and north walks jitter less, but still a bit
Northeast walk is ok

Is it just me or is the beltbuckle in the south walk moving in the wrong direction?

This is a really nice sprite by the way.

Hi!

First some general things: You have almost no shading, so I don't know how anyone is supposed to critique it. This carries over into the anatomy since the body really appears paperthin without shading and we therefore cannot get a really good grip on the anatomy. Also try working on a midvalue background unless you ingame background will be very light, this can help a lot with choosing colors.

The base figure is going in a good direction, but as Basketcase says he has no forehead and the ears are very prominent and a little too low. He needs armpits =). His elbows shouldn't be visible from this angle. The blond beard is too yellow / saturated.

Swords are looking good!

Dithering the chainmail works very well.

Shading on the pant has to little contrast... and did romans really have pants?

Leather armour looks neat. Again almost no shading!

Yeah that's my cents, keep going and this will look great.

Nice!

I think you could have a look at some reference pics, your rocks are too round and regular, there's a nice edit by surt in http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=13217.0

My attempt:

Also reduced the brigthness of the secondary light source... it is after all secondary =)

Hey, just wanted to drop in and say this is a great thread and very instructive - great work guys!

I think one last thing that could maybe be done with the bow animation is to shift his shadow back slightly as he moves back his point of balance and twists his torso.

In the idle animation I feel like everything is moving at cross purposes just for the sake of movement. You need to do a little research (real fighters or other sprites) to figure out that motion you actually want to convey.

Dropped the pixels at the feet, fixed helmet, added details and fixed edges to tank. I think your crate is good except for too little value difference between the top and front.

Thanks!

oh yeah, found the commercial critique thread, that's a pretty cool game. Used some of their ideas to further improve the tiles.

Added soldier + tank, and pushed saturation way up. Cool? Partial outline or no outline? I'd prefer not to need the outline, but I suppose this is one of those function over form situations.

Hey pretty cool - nice clouds and some good lines on the the girl.

Small edit:

- The hair color ramp was too cramped so spread it out a bit
- Reduced background influence by lightening stray dark pixels and coloring the ship
- Attemped to fix the front knee

What's the deal with posting as double resolution? clicking will zoom, shift-click unzoom =)

After seeing StevenM's recent awesome 8-bit mockups I had to revisit my tileset to try to achieve something similar... tadaah:

Yeah the tiled floor are almost identical to Steven's, but they where so genious I had to use them! This style rocks btw, anybody know of any good games using similar techniques? C+C welcome as always.

The darker floor is better => feels more like night time. I still miss some object to the left to help define the floor. Quick edit:

I like the left most car the best.. dunno why =)
