General Discussion / Ancient Graph Paper Pixel Art
« on: April 23, 2008, 09:21:13 pm »
Hello Gentleman,

I'm hardly involved in pixel art anymore since I... well... don't pixel anymore.  :)

But I found some fun stuff a couple months back you guys might get a kick out of.  Pixel art on graph paper. :D

These were all made somewhere between 1990 and 1995.  Some of the file are large jpg scans over 200k.  My apologies for that.

Virtually everything I did was character sprites, not to mention being 10-15 years old, so the quality is questionable.  But I found it amusing to see again how I thought about making game assets, back before helpful and common programs like Photoshop, Paint, Paint Shop Pro, etc.

Some character graphic, with a fireball shot.  I'm pretty this was from around 1993 or later when I transitioned from the Commodore 64 to the PC and QBasic.

The rest of the images I'll link instead, just so I don't destroy anybody on dial-up.

Bomber 1, 2, 3 - A character from some bombing platformer.  At one point I think it was a top down RPG, so there's down walk animations too.

Enemy Animation - Some cheesy little enemy animation

Dark Planets 1, 2, 3 - A little space ship exploration game.  A moon, space station, and the ship.

3x5 Font - Just as it sounds.  A 3x5 font on graph paper.

8x8 Font - Numbers mostly.  Apparently Pac Man is a stardard font character.  Who knew.

Final Fantasy Adventure Study 1, 2 - Eyeballed from the B&W gameboy's screen, reproduced with a marker and pencil.

Final Fantasy Legend Mutant - Another gameboy sprite.  This time, I was playing with the idea of it being a side view battle sequence, akin to the NES/SNES Final Fantasy games.

Printed C64 Pixel Art - I lucked out to find something actually from the system.  An immitation mockup of Neuromancer cyberspace, some floppies, and joystick+mouse.

Printed C64 Starfox - Apparently I drew a starfox ship on the C64.

Printed C64 Final Fantasy Adventure Character - Also experimented with the Final Fantasy Adventure character on the C64.

Printed Sprite Sheet - At some point, I designed a printable sheet for creating character sprite pixel art.  With room for DOS 8+3 filenames too.

Game Maps 1, 2 - A couple game maps drawn on graph paper.

I've also recently acquired the means to back up my Commodore 64 floppies.  So if I'm lucky, my old ass C64 art might still be there.  Not that I was ever one of those groovy pixelers, everything I ever did was character sprites, but still.  Oldksool is oldskool.  :)
