General Discussion / Re: Pixelation's Future
« on: September 01, 2022, 07:34:33 am »
This forum was in a big part responsible for forming my character (while being a teenager) and connected me with people who were able to support me in making a life-changing decision. Thank you everyone for these things and thank you for keeping this valuable piece of history and knowledge database alive.

Devlogs & Projects / Re: Kickstarter thread!

Hi pixelation

Love the new theme, feels very at home.  ;D

I would like to give a shout-out for a project a few friends of mine are working on. This time it's not a game, but a service for indie developers and game artists, which you might want to profit from.

It's a couch-surfing platform for indiegame developers (artists, programmers, writers, musicians, everyone) so they have free accommodation for game festivals (like GDC, Gamescom, A Maze, Nordic Game Conference, etc.).

If you are interested in going to game festivals but are hindered by expensive accommodation costs, or want to support fellow game developers, please have look at their kickstarter page and maybe support them. The prototype is already online at indiecouch.org and was successfully tested and used at this years Ludicious Game Festival in Switzerland.

Even if you can't back them, I would really appreciate if you could give a shout-out on your Twitter or Facebook Feed to spread the word.
It is really important to share the project (if you like the idea), even if you can't back it with money. These crowdfunding project need as much exposure you can get and involving the community is important to get the message out to as many people as possible :)

I hope you like the concept of this kickstarter and support and share their project.

Thank you all a lot!  :y:

Pixel Art / Re: Cacani - Computer Assisted Cel Animation
« on: December 07, 2014, 12:01:14 pm »
CACANi is out since a few days. Currently windows only. I think I read somewhere, that there will be an OSX Version later on, but I can't find the information again. Maybe @CACANI Team can say more about it?

Website: https://cacani.sg
There are also a lot of Workflow Videos on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/cagntu/videos

There's a short promo which lasts until Dec. 8th ($167 instead of $239 for a perpetual license).

It looks quite powerful, but requires some thinking/planning with more complex animations. I'm not sure how to handle situations which requires lot of geometry changes / new lines each frame. But with experience such situations can be automated as well, maybe just need more keydrawings.

@CACANI Team:
- In the perpetual license, will I have access to future updates for free?
- Will there be an OSX Version in the future?
- I saw you used Microsoft Surface Devices since the early days. How do Surface Pro 2 and Pro 3 compare to each other (especially Wacom vs. N-Trig in terms of palm rejection)? Can you recommend the Pro 3 for CACANi?

[edit]
@CACANI Team: Have you seen the ETHZ/Disney Research paper for "automation of thight inbetweens"? They use algorithms to determine which lines correspond to each other in different frames and have ways to manually re-connenect them when the algorithm fails:

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: PixelArt tutorial illustration and mini dump
« on: September 01, 2013, 06:36:44 pm »
Interesting idea, here's my take:

Thoughts:
I don't care about color-count (36 up to 43). Because the tile are so small, clarity is most important. Each tile has its own sub-palette, no reuse of colors. Increases readability through color-coding. For the pixel-clusters: I use mainly flats, tried to avoid gradients and single-pixel noise. No black outlines or lines inside forms to separate different parts. The design of the objects are symbols, abstracted forms which should convey a general idea, not something specific. The perspective changed from side-view to somewhat top-down-front-ish. Light comes from above, object cast shadows underneath them to increase the feel of 3d space. The character is 23px out of 24px high, so it can bob 1px while walking.

General Discussion / Re: Some noob questions about pixel art.

Maybe I can answer your grayscale problem, but only if you have Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop allows you to use different "Layer Modes", one which is called "Color". When you have a grayscale layer underneath and a blank layer with "color-mode" on top, you can paint on that with whatever color you like and the perceived value from the layer below stays constant. The interesting thing is, as long as the values are correct, you can go pretty wild with the colors and the image still reads okay.

Another method could be choosing colors in LAB mode. Choosing colors in LAB is not very intuitive, because A means Red vs. Green, B Blue vs. Yellow and L equals Lightness, but if you keep the lightness constant, you can play around with A and B and the color has the same value.

I hope I got everything correct, please correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe you can't get around getting a feeling for colors through experience. To check if it works value-wise, convert your colored image into grayscale (but don't use desaturate. Even though it also gives a grayscale image, the values are perceived differently!)

Yeah, Sals was one of my first favorite pixel artists :D

Here's the animated version, I have more work from him saved...

But let's not forget this epic collab between ptoing and helm :)

Thanks a lot for these memories. Checked out madgarden pixelation archive, good stuff there. Thanks a lot!

Yup, I'm pretty sure it was pixelation.swoo.net. With all the other tsugumo subdomain-glory.

Btw, here's another temporary pixelation forum, the posts are still readable:

I'd like to share some thoughts about Cosmigo ProMotion.

I bought the V5.1 in July 2007 and used it ever since (no upgrade). These days I bought a new Computer (Asus EEE EP121 Slate) with Win7 64bit and 4GB of Rams. After installing ProMotion, I couldn't open a file or create a new one.
So I wrote an Email to Jan Zimmermann and asked if that is a known error and if there is a solution. He told me that this has to to with my memory and that the old v5.1 doesn't support more than 3GB. Now, do you know what? Normally, a Developer would suggest to buy an update to solve this problem (~40$). But no, he sent me a Patch to solve this problem, letting me use my old version on the new computer, for free.
I'm amazed by his support and like to let the world know about this great piece of software. If you're undecided between ProMotion and e.g. GraphicsGale, I suggest ProMotion. The amazing support makes the bigger price more than worth.
To show my gratitude to Jan, I'll upgrade to the newest Version soon, even though I can use the old now without problems.

I hope it was helpful to some of you. Thanks for reading.

Found an interesting article from the inventor of the "pixel":
Quote
Squares was the logical thing to do,” Kirsch says. “Of course, the logical thing was not the only possibility … but we used squares. It was something very foolish that everyone in the world has been suffering from ever since.

He proposes a different form of "pixels", similar to what some do with C64 characters to create pictures.
