Do big explosions look like that? I mean, surely as they're the actual light source you wouldn't see much shading on them until the initial blast was cooling down and becoming more smokey?

Yuss, as Ptoing points out it's that rolling motion of the explosion which really makes them special. Have a look at CPS2 games like Captain Commando and some of the other Capcom scrolling beat 'em ups for further inspiration. However as a first pass, it's not bad at all.

I've only ever been involved with one fad, and it started by accident after Kable adopted that bloody awful image I drew as an avatar. Now that was a fad anyone could join because you had to draw 'em as bad as possible...
