Pixel Art / Re: She is incredibly small

for more info on selout, we had a pretty good conversation in this topic:
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=2511.0
I think I understand the idea better, actually. Thanks. =o

More mindful application of pixels, colors, aa and so on will be a benefit to this piece.
If I could ask a personal question; what is it that you see that helps you to fix the flaws in people's work?

Don't think you're working on pixel art. See something you want to make, then translate it from that three-dimensional figure inside your head, and put it on the screen. That is to say, depth, and form, and stuff, those are important. Even if you're drawing a profile, if you just start drawing it, it'll probably end up looking wrong because you drew something two-dimensional.

The reason so many "How to draw" books tell you to block out a stick figure, or some balls, and cylinders, and cones and stuff, is so that you can think of what's there before you start drawing it. It makes you think about what you're drawing in three dimensions easier, and stuff. As you get better, you'll probably be able to think, and draw three dimensions, on a two dimensional plane without even having to think too much about it. ;D

This is my first ever attempt at a smart sounding post, how'd I do?

blaming your generation (one of which most members on this forum are part of) holds up as little more then a flimsy excuse not to try...
That was a joke, though. :x I am going to hit the books, but I'm not going to stop and study. In case things aren't clear.

Also I meant add more to that one post. I literally had to drop my stuff and go somewhere.
See, my grandmother's being operated on today. She's having her knee replaced.

I don`t know if you want critique, but it`s clear to me from looking at this stuff that you are perhaps emulating "styles" of pixel art too much, perhaps inventing "styles" when there are none (and where there are, instead, actual design skills that are applicable on any artistic medium) and not focusing on your fundamentals. You suffer in anatomy and lighting, your errors showing under the less successful attempts to hide them with pixel art limitations and stylistics. If you really want to progress as an artist, my advice would be to hit the books on anatomy, perspective and basic pencil shading (there are lots and lots of books online) before returning to pixel art. Do not concern yourself with style (I especially found mentions of "custom style" absurd. What does that even mean?) because actual personal aesthetic is emergent out of skillful, singular application of the basic artistic skills. It`s not something you search for.

If you`re about 14-15 or so, take everything I just said one level less drastically than it sounds, you have time. If you`re an adult though, you should rush rush rush back to the fundamentals, otherwise you might get trapped in this for a long time.

I mean no offense. This is a critique board and this is critique. Happy new year.
I've never felt so ridiculous for saying "a custom style." I mean, what a self defeating mind-set. Instead of growing in all directions, I was drawing myself a box to fit cozily in forever~!

Oh hell, I'll pick up some books, too. I can't hurt, right?

I'd post more, but I have to go because of some personal issues.

#23, the mockup with the guy. i am MAKING you finish that.
Only if you and I make it a project. You have to be the backbone of the project if you want it to get off the ground.
(Nah, I'll try to make some poses, or maybe some tiles early next year. xP)

I think I'm making TP-esque stuff just to make mock-ups, and stuff, but like I said, I don't know where I'm going with this. The first thing I figure I need to do is translate the gameplay in to two dimensions.

Anyway I guess this'll be a pixel dump thread then. Until my TP stuff picks up enough momentum for me to call it a project.

ermm.. i actually prefer the shape of the ones you have, they look like they would fit the style better.  I think that they would look more natural than ones at perfect angles.
Because perfect angles don't look organic enough, am I right?

I still have no idea where I'm going though. For instance, if I wanted to make Twilight Princess-esque tiles and stuff, it'd be hard to make them all platformer, and the like.

Oh Pixelation, point me in the right direction~!
Hey could I post a topic where I put all my old stuff, and formaly introduce myself? 'Cause I like revising old stuff.

Let me try to get this all in chronological order... Expect me to add stuff in random places as I find stuff I made ages ago but lost for a while.

I'll just say what month I think it was made in, so don't shoot me for being inacurate.

Febuary 2006 and Older Stuff:

Rust, a style I made

And a whole mess of people IN that style. Forget you saw this, it brings me much shame.

Mario stuff

Holy crap, most of my newer stuff just isn't as good as this. Okay some of the poses are stale though.

Personal Character

>.>

March 2006:

Some fighting style I made that never got past this one pose.

That's my character. Or an incarnation of him. He doesn't have a set look, or anything, just the long hair, blue-grey color scheme thing.

A friend in the same style

She made the Sonic Advance style sprite, though.

An attempt at creating a personal logo/emblem thing.

and some other emblems, too. Mine's that LR one, and stuff.

April 2006:

Next-Gen Sonic

I still don't know what that game is called.
Sonic and the Secret Rings, or something dumb like that.... I'm a bit proud of this.

Ratchet in Sonic Advance style

Or Sonic Battle, I can't tell difference.

Captain Picard

It was suposed to be in Jump Super Stars style.

May 2006:

A half Ganon inspired Dark Elf Guy in Ahruon's style

Easily my worst piece ever. I mean, it's not even finished. Well a lot of things aren't, but even then it sucks hard.

An old avatar I think I'll wear here, I don't enjoy being naked D:

EVERYONE acused me of editing this
I didn't, k? D:

June 2006:

Mario and Luigi - Super Star Saga style Vash the Stampede~!

I like this one. ^-^

Reaver the attourney!

Let it be known that I did not make the background. Anyway this sucks hard next to the remake I'm... still doing. You'll see it when you scroll down.

Reaver in Guilty Gear X style

and some in progress pics: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip1.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip2.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip3.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip4.png

Reaver punch!

I won't sprite me in a white shirt ever again. I feel like it's a bit off balance.

July 2006

~Metroid Project~

I'm a great big huge Metroid fan. The size of my Metroid fandom is really really big.
Too bad I never finished. That is, I wanted to sprite EVERY Metroid related thing there was to sprite in a single style.

- after some expirimenting -

Some Metroid Prime Visor-based HUDs built for a PSP resolution
Combat
Scan
And Thermal
I never did x-ray, :P

*shrugs*

Health pickups.

~Not Metroid anymore (For a while, anyway)~

Pokemon Trainer Reaver, and some pokemon from his region

Aerosmith T-shirt ;o

Emoticons I made but never finished

This was a busy month, it seems. o.o

Two Master Swords, one's not done

Fandom.

My character from Monster Hunter, made 2D

One of my best, I think.

Some tile templates I made to assist myself

That I haven't used. Mwuahaha

August 2006:

I remade that Combat Visor HUD to have part of the Helment

Which was kind of stupid when you consider that it was intended for a side scrolling game where you wouldn't be looking through Samus's eyes.
Oh well, it looked cool.

Unfinished sprite

Looking at unfinished sprites is sort of like looking at fetuses in jars. Take that for whatever it's worth, then forget I ever said it.

Solid Snake's Kingdom Hearts mugshot

I didn't do him justice.

Sol Badguy, and Ky Kiske in some RPG style

I think it was supposed to be Summon Night's overworld style, but I suck at following rules.

Reavermon

Some event at some forum where we had to make Digimon based off of our characters.
I didn't finish.

September 2006:

Naked Snake in some custom style =o

Never got past the first pose.

October 2006:

Forever work inprogress tileset

Meant to be the inside of some giant monster.

Kanden and Spire

I didn't make Samus, OR finish Spire.

Samus in an Overworld style

Never got past pose one~!

November 2006:

Me as an attourney again, only this time, unfinished

My clothes are sexier though.

A Metroid in M&L style

I did it in ten minutes. ^-^

It was in my pixels folder, so I'll post it

I like it despite it being so simple.

So very Wario

Based off of this. Completely custom.

Metroid stuff, again

I was re-working that HUD for a DS size screen, too.

December 2006:

A world map I never finished

 :-[ I never finish anything.

A member on another forum I've been showering with gift art =o

I got lazy on the scythe on that second one. Also they're different outfits, and stuff.

Myself as a female made for Trangender Week on another forum

>.>

A pipe...

A single lonely pipe. And his cut up brother, actualy.

AND FINALY SOME TWILIGHT PRINCESS STUFF THIS THREAD WAS ORGINALY ABOUT~!
Link

And some big empty sheet that' gonna have a HUD, and some Touch Screen stuff.

And that's it I think. For now, anyway.
