Pixel Art / Re: Second Try For Tree
« on: November 25, 2009, 02:11:22 am »
Yeah, uh, you only gave us like four hours to say anything. Pixelation isn't some omniscient pixel critiquing super-machine. :mean:

Anyway something's odd about your tree's proportions, I think. The stump's kind of wide so I'd imagine the tree should be taller...but that's not the real issue and it's most likely just my imagination. The real problem is, or it seems to me that you've drawn up a stump and slapped a little leaf bubble on top of it instead of, uh, drawing a tree properly. It doesn't help that you're using the same line art that you used earlier. If it were me I'd start with a naked tree and draw leaf bunches, but I've never done that and Gnarf's method seems quicker and easier. You should probably try that first.

But feel free to totally ignore me.

I'm not exactly good with cloth, and I didn't have time to look for the greatest references... You can tell I got stumped for a while because there are four almost identical progress thingies. (:sry:) I also think I screwed up somewhere down the line because I was too lazy to really reshade the skull once I draped some cloth over it. In the end I decided to make the eyes smaller to make more room for some kind of expression....the vertebra I added in at the last second almost seems like it could be the lower jaw, which makes it kind of look like a smile in the end. If I were to continue I'd try and work with that. I'm not sure if I strayed too far from your original intention, but I digress, this might help you find something to do with that hood of yours, possibly.

So I think your piece has seen a lot of improvement, but, well, it still has a lot of outline. I suppose that's fine, but I think it's hurting you more than it's helping you right now. There's also a little bit of random dithering inside the hood that just seems off.

Can you kinda explain "thinking with outlines" Your free to edit it to correct a mistake.
Adcrusher probably explained it better than I could have. I think Jad was trying to say the same thing, too.

Here's an example of how I usually work...

...I'm sure I made plenty of mistakes myself, (:() but they're not important right now. Your latest edit kind of fixes some of the problems your original had, but it still seems to me as if you're only coloring your line art, and not defining a skull. ...Yeah, you're probably going to want to wait for someone more experienced and articulate to help you out. Sorry if I'm not being helpful.

Tried AA on the edge of the hood, idk if I like it. Will prolly get rid of it anyways.
I don't believe I can give you any practical advice...but that is not AA. :yell:

...Why can't I control myself? Here. I know it's not helpful, but yeah.

...What is it I want to say...? You're thinking with outlines, so you're failing to express volume. Or that's what it seems like to me.
Err, but uh, nice progress so far. I don't mean to say mean things if that's what it sounds like.

Yeah, forget you saw this edit...I already said I had no idea what I was talking about... :(

Why are you so fixated on twisting her knees so far in they should be breaking? I don't understand it.

Yeah, the shadow is fine in my opinion. Instead I think you should work on readability. It might just be me, but I can't tell what's going on from the waist up. I'm still working on my understanding of anatomy so I won't say anything specific, but her arm also looks a bit...wrong, and the pose seems painfully unnatural. Oh, and where is her other arm? I just realized it doesn't exist.

The readability issues might have something to do with the one-colored jumpsuit. I recommend throwing a vest, or something on her. Or something.

That was my first post in like two years. :yell:

Yes please.
While I was trying to define the shadows, I also thought I wanted to work with a blue-ish purple light source.
I didn't try, but I'd like to. I've never used anything but white light before.

It's occurred to me that I don't know anything about shading larger things.

 I think I addressed the major problems
My posture looks terrible, but I like it. (Unless it looks really bad, I don't know)
Also, I started to draw a shirt, because looking at it naked was kind of weird.

I guess right now my biggest priority is finding a camera so you guys can help with likeness.
And cleaning my lines.
