This is how I dither. Try it if you think it looks better.
I also think you should darken the lightest color, but that's just me and I don't know anything.

I colored Brian's snail.
Edit: Recolored with more contrast:
I don't really like the color of the splotches, but using the same colors as the shell eliminated four of my colors.
I think this turned out pretty good, for me.
10 colors, not including black.
