Pixel Art / Warning : Shmup Thread approaching fast!
« on: April 08, 2007, 07:32:49 pm »
Cool, so... I am making a shoot-them-up.

This is the premise for the player's ship, it looks bad on a light background, so here it is on black.

Some parts look like they grow/stretch/move with the rotation, but that is the sort of thing i was going for. I don't want it to seem extremely mechanical. I'll use this thread to dump the other graphics as this project progresses. The enemies are actually going to be multiple sections, most of the gameplay will be boss/miniboss battles, not one-shot-kill enemies.

Go at it.

General Discussion / Art Movements, Present, Past, Future.
« on: March 07, 2007, 01:26:15 am »
So I've been studying some various art movements in my arts and design class for the past few weeks and I got to thinking, "these are all very distinct, how could so many people in one place follow one general movement? What movement are we a part of? What ARE the movements of today?"

There are quite a handful of styles that are recognized in very specific regions and times, such as cubism, fauvism, impressionism, pop-art, expressionism, realism, etc. But what about today? Why are there so many diverse and unique 'movements' in our society? There are people who stick with more traditional styles, like abstract, realism, less in areas like surrealism, cubism, impressionism. pop-art still has a following. But what about our generation's unique style? will pixel art be remembered as a movement? What is the cause of the sudden lack of common style and limitations? More opportunities? more technological influence? more freedom?

I was originally intending on posting this in the off-topic thread, but i want a more in depth discussion. What are your 2 cents?

Pixel Art / Sprite vs Background, ongoing battle
« on: January 16, 2007, 01:28:47 am »
For all you game developers and artists, maybe you know or have been through this issue. I've run into the the issue of a sprite showing up poorly on different shades of backgrounds.

The original sprite has no outline, and the shades are fairly close to 50/50, or at least that is how they read. here is the character:

So the game has fairly dark background, except in a case such as this, the character will be ontop of a rather large object that is not as dark, and it reads somewhat poorly. maybe i have been staring at it too long. (i know the green reads alright, but the pants/hat area bugs me badly.)

I really don't want to take the cheap way out with a black outline.

So what do you guys and gals suggest?  :)
(as always, edits welcome.)

Cheers,
Stwelin

General Discussion / Always moving forward...
« on: December 09, 2006, 11:23:40 pm »
Alright, so 2d game development is just sort of a hobby of mine.  I haven't released much though, because i am a perfectionist (of sorts) and i feel a lot of my creations are amatuer...

Anyway, i'm a fairly adept GameMaker programmer, (at least, i have gotten away from using the drag&drop feature. :P) and i want suggestions as to what to move onto.  GameMaker is great, but it lacks a lot of... well, power.  I want a language or tool that i can create games with in with more a professional atmosphere, but won't be hard to pick up (within a reasonable amount of time, that is, but i am a quick learner).

Alright guys/gals... suggestions?

Pixel Art / [WIP] - Dark Knight
« on: December 03, 2006, 10:33:36 pm »
Just a little guy i've been working on. It's in it's pretty early stages. So far i've just scribbled out the basic shape and started filling in the basic colours, etc. Still needs a lot of cleaning up, but i wanted to post it here so that i could get feedback before getting too far in.

edits, critiques & the like always welcome.
(especially on the hand, it's really getting to me.)
