This edit below covers where I think you might be having trouble with the big guy.


I feel that he needs more definition and volume on his triceps and shoulders. Got rid of that curvy bit
near the upper torso as well (it made him appear somewhat effeminate). Added a bit more flare to the
pants as well.

Nice stuff. Great to know that Tsugumo's still around and working the craft. It would be nice to see some of his latest work. Can you supply a list of titles he's worked on recently in the industry?

Afro Samurai...The plot sucked but the animation and character designs were great for that anime. But I digress...Good work on your pixel rendition...but like jad stated earlier you need to be more consistent with your light sources...If its of any help try to think of his afro as a collection of spheres or clouds lumped together and not so much a straight linear gradient that's dithered...

Well, you might as well ban me from now for there is no way I can possibly finish this thing on time. I got caught up in trying too many things at once(I was trying to employ a monet type usage of color in a 256x256 pixel space, plus I had a hard time trying to come up with something matching the giftee's requirements) .In any case I can still submit the WIP. I'll PM the completed work to the giftee following my January ban (heh, a smiley in prison stripes would be most appropriate about now).

Tsu's tutorial and (the original) forum. Being lurking around ever since, posted every now and then, despite all the transitions. Have yet to show any serious improvement though (life and all) :-\.

Edit: Don't really have anything specifc in mind in terms of likes. So just have fun with it,
       but don't half-ass it. Give it your best shot and I'll be satisfied.

Looking at the overall quality of all the entries, I have to say, this is one of the best showcases of talent I've seen in a while.
Schu still has the best free style character sprite, but Camus is coming on pretty strong, especially where raw ingenuity is concerned. There is a range of diversity throughout. People are coming up with some nifty interpretations of the popeye character while still capturing his essence. As for myself, I did my best and my hopes are up, but with this calibre of quality output there's no telling for sure who will win. Best of luck to all, and may the best pixel-pusher win.

Howdy folks, I haven't been around in a while. In any case great contest thus far. Here are my entries:

Freestyle sprite against different color backgrounds.

EDIT 2/16/06: I refined my freestyle sprite somewhat; added a bit more definition
and detail to the arms and pipe. The changes make for a stronger "contender" I
believe.

EDIT 2/23/06: Freestyle...now with tatoo...



Boktai sprite against different color backgrounds.


And since practically everyone's done one, Popeye Boktai sprite "in game"


And a few WIP freestyle sprites in a slightly 'cleaner style'


Should be done with the second set of sprites before the deadline...
Time constraints won't allow for the completion of these WIPs, so just omit them
from consideration.
