Pixel Art / [WIP] Mandy the pragmatist
« on: September 22, 2009, 02:06:14 pm »
I came across one of Helm's blog entries a while back (see link here) and liked the idea of revamping
old school game art while keeping within the palette constraints of the original (EGA in this case).
I liked it so much I decided to take a stab at it myself

So here's the original sierra piece from Helm's blog:

followed by my current progress thus far:

and here's a (2X zoom) animated GIF progression (takes a while to load, so be patient):

If you've seen Helm's version and made comparisons, it's clear I'm aiming for a different mood.
Unlike Helm's version (which I hereby dub Mandy-The Discontent), this version is a bit more
pragmatic. This photo gig is a means to an end for this particular Mandy. She has her own goals.
Goals which this job may help move her towards. The girl is working this angle for all its worth.
Who knows what opportunities may present themselves ready for her to exploit...

C+C welcome.

Challenges & Activities / Re: Possible activity discussion.
« on: September 18, 2009, 07:06:29 pm »
Here's an idea for an activity. A while back helm posted on his blog a lengthy spiel
about EGA graphics of games long past (see link here).
What I found intriguing about the post is that he took a non-too-appealing image
and revised it within the constraints of the original palette to create a great piece of art.

Throughout his discussion of the piece he expounded on his interpretation of the original piece
and how it shaped his version. Great though the art was I found myself in disagreement with
the interpretation. I looked at the original and I couldn't quite find the discontent evident in
his version. The thought occurred to me that no two people would supply the same interpretation
and wouldn't be cool to see these interpretations in the form of a pixelation activity?

So here's the activity : Select a piece of pixel art and have participants in the activity revamp
the piece maintaining the original palette, supplying the rationale for your interpretation of the
original piece.

We could kick this off with versions of the "Codename: iceman" snapshot from Helm's blog post.
We could call it, REVAMP ACTIVITY: "VISIONS OF MANDY"...

The EGA mockups are in her pj profile.

And the rpg stuff I mentioned. Now that I'm looking at them again, they're much less EGA than I was thinking at the time I mentioned it. Not sure why I was thinking of it like that in my head.

Whoa, I love those EGA mock-ups. I've seen some of her work before and always associated her with other-worldly monsters and creepy line-art, (a lot of which is in this thread). Nice to see her other talents.

It's you're design. Whatever decision you make, make it to back up YOUR intentions for the character.
:y:

Looking at these characters I can't help but think that they'd make great and unusual gangster themed fighter sprites. Hell, I already have names for them in my head.
From left to right we have Johnny Longlegs all-round rogue and part-time illusionist (so that he can pull all sorts of goodies out of that big old hat of his), Gustav MonteVerde the Victorian East European Brawler, Zen ninjitsu master from the far east and Shane urban street fighter from Detroit, also a reputed grease-monkey... Okay so maybe I've become a little too invested in these guys..I'll stop now ...

Jacket bulks up the second guy and fits his archetype more.
I second that vote  :y:. That jacket makes him look like a Victorian style brawler which is very cool in my book  ;D.
As for the female character it is clear that you're going for an athletic build, but you might try hinting at more
curves here and there("I like big butts and I cannot lie, you other brothers can't deny.."). I dig the belly skin too  :D

Did you ever see Arachne's EGA platformer mockups? She also recently posted some RPG tiles and while I don't think they use hte ega palette, they have a bit of an EGA flavour to them.

I don't think I have. Gotta link?

I don't read the character as being girly at all. Xegnma's edit doesn't really add more femininity to the mix either, it just looks like a different haircut, but still a boy.
Maybe if some belly skin was exposed...but I didn't want to take too much liberty with the piece. I hope 1up trys throwing in a female character at some point though. I dig his(or is it her) style and I'm curious now about his skill in rendering females...

skittles.loli I agree with you, but I think maybe a complete sex change is in order   ;D

How's about this for a gender bender:

I think *she* fits in quite well. Adds a little estrogen to the mix.

Some incomplete oddities from my EGA phase...
