Challenges & Activities / Re: The Recorded Pixel Art Project

Through secretly-practised occult means I have aquired the above software and will begin my testing.
I think everyone or almost everyone knows what we mean here but can't say it out loud. :P
May I suggest that BlueBerry Software's FlashBack Express be added to the list of softwares? It doesn't seem to be mentioned.

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:01:32 pm »

meaningless to most, but meaningful to a few. Finished the first loop.
Could somone give me the meaning of this please? I am pretty sure it's some game but I don't know what one. Enlighten me!

Also: Earlier in the thread people were talking about their videogame purchases, and I'd like to get my two cents in.
Don't forget that there's a ton of awesome old DOS games and open source games out there, all for free. Certainly at least some of these will be ones your friends have never played! A couple of good sites for DOS are http://www.abandonia.com/ and http://hotud.org/. I've played (or at least dipped into) loads of good DOS games that I never played when they originally came out. :) I think one reason I play DOS games is that they're free and many of them are really good. They haven't really aged despite the introduction of shiny new 3D engines, etc etc.

One game I really must recommend is Dwarf Fortress. Great stuff! It's probably the most 'fun' game on my HD at the moment. By that I mean that I think I get the most enjoyment out of it.There's some awesome tutorials out there: the Complete and Utter Newbie Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress is still great, if outdated; it can teach you the basics. Find it at http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/. You can then head over to the Dwarf Fortress Wiki at df.magmawiki.com/ for more info. Also Captnduck's DFVIDTUTS are pretty great. Search him out on YouTube. As for the controls which so many complain about... all I can say is, persevere. I guess I found it easier because I'm used to using half-baked or arcaic commandline and open source software interfaces.

Minecraft is another recommendation if you like Legos, but it costs money. Way easier to get into though. Buy it at http://www.minecraft.net/

EDIT: Oh and if you like racing games then Supertuxkart at http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/ is really very polished for a open source project. No doubt there's some good DOS/NES/other old ones available too.

So here we go again.

It's currently in outline stage. I'm really quite happy with the outlines though  :)
Feel free to edit it and post it here so as to explain things or offer constructive criticism, just please don't use it or your edits of it in any games or anything without asking me first. As usual I would be very happy to recieve constructive criticism.

I'll probably start coloring it and add a spell sometime tomorrow.

Hopefully this looks Sliiiggghhttllyy better. I am pretty new to pixel art as well though.

I tried to make the face more apparent and the magic spell was making too much confusion so I slimmed it down to a purple orb.

Oooh! I am SO jealous!!  ;D

Where can I find a really good tutorial on pixel art?

Whats it supposed to be?

I guess it is a bit small. I've stopped work on it for now, it was really too small to do anything with.

So. What it is supposed to be is a mage/wizard/whatever-you-call-it casting a spell. However I guess it's too small to recognize.

Now... what shall I try next?  :-\

Hey there!

This is my first foray into pixel art for quite a long time, and my first ever really 'serious' sprite. As usual constructive criticism, advice, et cetera would be very much appreciated.

Here we go:

Oh and could you tell me what the best image host for pixel art is?

What do you mean?

I cancelled the project because I wanted to start off with something smaller.
