Pixel Art / Re: Fish
« on: November 10, 2011, 07:28:30 pm »
love those colors. the pink shadows and outlines are really adventurous and it pays off.

some of the outlines seem a bit jagged (most prominently his calves), and the straight line on his arm stands out to me.

I see what jams is saying about the center of gravity. it shouldn't be as aggressive as zangief, but the size of the fish's head compared to the body (or probably the location that it joins the shoulders without a neck) is what makes him look so topheavy and unbalanced. on the whole it isn't too much of an issue, and with the animation of the tail it has a better balance imo.

i hope that you're going to give the tail a ribbon effect with that animation, man. that's what it looks like it's gonna be and i can imagine it looking really sweet when finished.

are you gonna be animating more of him?  ;D

Pixel Art / Re: [wip] Deep ink pit

The problem with those water tiles imo is that the peaks look like they slush forward then back again. instead try to make them move—one should fall into the next to create the illusion that each peak is sliding across the screen. that breaks the obvious tiling.

Also once that's nailed down, I think you could really make the animation a lot subtler—and a lot slower. maybe it shouldn't have those kind of wavey peaks at all. when I think about ink or oil vs water I imagine it being all goopy and sticky rather than pure liquid. even closer to a tar pit kind of thing.

as for the sponges, the 197X school setting is clever but the problem is that people just won't really get it. it doesn't fit in with the modern image of a classroom and people won't naturally think that way at all. can you replace them with more modern chalkboard brushes? i do think they could totally work as maybe a sub-boss or something but as a regular common enemy it makes people question.

hey guys it's been a while  :D

so first i got some rpg sprites:

the main character is Maria de Luz Esperanza Cervantes, a highschool Queen Bee in New York City:

But on a family vacation, her daddy's private plane crashlands on the island of the fountain of youth and she encounters these kinds of guys (the top row being party members) in a zany adventure:

and then some platformer stuff. all of these are incomplete because i wanna get the animation down before i get into the details:

this one i was just practicing leg movement it led to:

platformer hero walk cycle.

Pixel Art / Mortimer Cool's cool walk animation

Hey. Haven't posted in quite a while. Over the past couple of days I've begun developing some characters for a platform game.

I've begun doing the animating for the main character, Mortimer Cool.

I'd love feedbac on everything. Expect more soon. Thanks. :)

EDIT: Man, I just looked at my ancient topics on this forum and I can't believe how much I've improved.

Pixel Art / Plaformer Character Design
« on: October 18, 2007, 09:16:16 pm »
Allright guys, this is hands-down the best forum I know of for getting critiques. I've posted some stuff in the past here and have improved a lot because of it. I used to try to make platformers with RPGMaker which was really stupid. Since then I've discovered Multimedia Fusion and can finally make something that I want to make. So I'm trying to do some more serious platformer spriting now and am working on developing a style.

A little old (maybe a month) but pretty representative of the level I'm currently at:

(don't focus as much on the woman to the side- that's not really the style I want to develop as much as the cartoony platform guys)

These are character I made today at work.

Corporate America and his partner Big Business.

if you only have 3 frames to work with, then you are correct in doing it this way.
as far as critique, I would suggest giving some movement to the torso/upperbody.. the shoulders look rather stiff, especially in the sideview.

Allright.

Old > New

Thanks, I think it's an improvement. :)

I only have three frames to work with. What would you suggest I do in its place?

Progress so far.

I also have two little guys I made on the front idle to test this thing out.
