Pixel Art / Re: Daft Punk helmets
« on: April 11, 2011, 11:05:06 am »
First, all the regions are very messy. Metal has smooth shading, and any pixel art should have organized shading. It looks like you just drew over it with a brush tool and never really refined it. Also, look at references for shading. Round objects have shaded regions that conform almost exactly to their shape, like this-

But the first thing you need to do is just clean it up.

I can see why you would think so, it does in fact look really messy even though I did try to refine it. I never thought of looking at balls to get a good reference picture of the helmet, thanks for that :)

I'll see if I can get something done today, thanks for the help!

Like this?

No, not like that.
Do like this

But the outline that is the whole shape should be a slightly darker shade of gray.

I've decided to scrap the two helmets and proceeded with drawing something new instead, picture 4 posts down is the one I'm drawing

Greetings, I started drawing the helmets the guys in Daft Punk uses yesterday and the first incarnation was this :

I felt that the helmet on the guy to the right was not completely realistic in terms of lightning, one reason for that was me not having a fixed source of light on either of them.

So I did what any man would do and recoloured:

The source of light is now currently in the top left corner, slightly behind the helmet. I'm not entirely happy with the colouring however, and I'm not sure how to properly fix it so I would very much enjoy C&C on it so that it can become a lot better :)
Thanks in advance!

I'll do any changes that'll make anything look better, except removing the black outlines. I already got way too much sprites to change it and I prefer it this way :/

The time you'll have to invest will reward itself tenfold, the overall quality will become a lot better :)
What bothers me with the character still is the anatomy, he looks really, really stiff and those arms are almost as long as the character itself. Is that something you're going to change?

Any opinions? How can I make it better?

Work on those contrasts, right now it's all a blur because the colours you use are almost all the same.

Don't need to resize your art for Pixelation. Click on the image, and shift-click on it too. We have a zoom script :)

It may seem counter intuitive but perhaps what the edge of the sword needs is a darker line and some AA (better AA than what I managed, frankly). That's one way to go. Also check front horn for some pixel-by-pixel alterations to make it work better.

Slightly off-topic, I was wondering about the zoom function here actually ;
I really like it, it's a neat function. What bothers me is that you can't zoom out, and that the pixels get smudged as you zoom in. Is it possible to have the zoom work so that it works like in MS Paint? The smudginess when you zoom in makes it harder to distinguish colours etc.
The smudge is due to your browser, not much to do about it

Firefox is fixed but Chrome and someother browsers still do this.
And just hold ctrl as you click to zoom out. ::)

Ah alright, cheers :)

there we go.  yeah i was having a small amount of issues with the upper body movement.  couldn't make it subtle.

It looks like he's bending his back backwards, his torso should also jump a bit due to him walking. His arm is really, really long. Especially his forearm, they appear to be as long as his legs.
Fix the proportions, the upper arm is longer than the forearm.

THanks pistachio. I understand these issues and I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it just yet. I'm kind of playing with a symbolic representation here more than a realist one (like Ogre Battle SNES, the characters are as big as town and are actually a group of units, not just one character).

The soldier represents a hundred soldiers (as to limit the number of units on display and make it easier and more agreeable to read for the player).

In a few words : there are still a lot of important decisions to be taken!

Oh, so this is for a game of sorts?

My point, however, still stands. Whether it's one soldier or a hundred the perspective is still off. I might make an edit just for the heck of it, but I think you get the idea.

Anyway, it was difficult to interpret one gargantuan soldier as an army of 100. Might want to consider implementing the number somewhere perhaps, or making the 'symbolism' idea more apparent, perhaps with a giant helmet or head or spear or something. Might turn out even more ridiculous than what you have now though..

Maybe add a shield, and have the number of how many units available on the shield?

I thought I recognized the explosion from somewhere, then I remembered that I've done an explosion with the same reference that you've been using :

here.

I think the explosion would benefit a lot from a few more frames to smooth it out, like this :
