Pixel Art / Some action guy
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:17:40 am »
Yesterday I made a serious attempt at pixeling with the nds homebrew app UA Paint. This is the result.  :)

The colors got a bit fudged when loading the file in windows, but I'm too lazy to fix it. XD

UA Paint was nice, would like some improvements though, like RGB sliders for one ^^
But I'd recommend it.

I've had Little Big Planet for about three weeks now (bought the lbp+ps3 bundle  :D ) and I can say this, it is a good game. Very good actually. I don't have internet access at home yet so I can't say anything about the online experience, but I have played it with three other friends localy and I find it hard to imagine not finding anything about that experience that you wouldn't like. Sure there are some issues with the game, but these are mainly minor issues and not worth getting riled up for (if you ask me, which you didn't).
The depth changing issue is annoying when it occurs, but I've found it occurs very rarely when playing well designed levels, like most of the ones that come on the disc.

The camera can do some annoying choices when playing multiplayer, but mostly that's because someone is dragging behind.

Now the 'floaty' controls... I actually don't have any gripe with it. It just something to get accustomed to. I love platformers and know just as well as anyone else who does that faulty controls kills a game.
I played through Overlord and Tomb Raider Legend with a control delay of up to a second (freaking vista). And that's way worse than 'floaty' controls, but I still had an enjoyable time playing.

 :)

EDIT// Also, don't go into edit mode with three friends unless you've decided what to do... that is to say if you don't want total chaos...  ::)

Dangit

And here I thought I had an original idea going...  ::)

I have this idea for a challenge I've been mauling over for a while, though I can't start it myself.  The idea is to take a frame from a movie and reinterpret the image in pixelart. All visual styles, methods etc are ok as long as the frame is recognizable. Paintovers are not ok though, that'd just be lazy.

RealFlow doesnt do all that maya/max do. its a fluid generator and renderer software. it may be more expensive then max or maya, but is not as broad. its designed for a specific porpouse.

That's exactly what I meant.

Quote from: Me
RealFlow is another specialized program which does something that can be done in Max/Maya but a zillion times better.

Now, in max you can do similar simulations that you can with realflow. But take the most complex simulation you can muster in max and do the same in realflow and it doesn't take the same processing power to do.
The definition of "broad"  varies depending on viewpoint. When comparing it to the whole of max then yes rf isn't as broad. But if you look at max's physics/fluid simulation part and compare that to rf, then rf is broader by far.

If you just want to practice modeling, I'd recommend Silo.

If you don't have access to Maya or(/and) 3DS Max I personally would say it's better to stick with smaller programs which do one thing specifically. I.e. One program for modeling, another one for animation etc. Specialized programs have the benefit of giving the user better control over the programs intent. Yes Maya and 3DS Max can do virtually anything, but the price of that is that the programs UI get blotched and hard-navigated for novices. RealFlow is another specialized program which does something that can be done in Max/Maya but a zillion times better. (Although RealFlow will cost you your right arm and your firstborn to purchase. It's expensive!)

For tutorials I'd say go to www.3dbuzz.com or google.

Looks really coool!  :D

But I think you should do the legs shading in the same way you did the arms. That is, making the inner side shadowed. Would make it easier to see which leg is moving when viewing from the side.

Pixel Art / Playing around with fighter sprites
« on: October 25, 2008, 01:42:07 am »
I'm playing around with fighter sprites and thought I'd post them. Gonna play around with animation too, cause I need to get better at it  ;D

Here's my first one. With this I used Third Strike Ryus pallette, I've strayed off from it a teeny-tiny bit.

Original Silhouette:

First coloring:

Here I've tried a few different things to make the sprite look better:

I think the second one turned out best, but a second opinion is always good.

Recently I've noticed a strange problem on the forums when viewing posts. Sometimes when someone has posted an image all I see is:

... instead of the actual image. I don't know why this is so, I never had this problem before.
I think it started after I installed Forefox 3, puked on it and went back to 2.0.0.17.

Anyone else have this problem?  :'(
