Pixel Art / Platformer Project [WIP]
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:07:44 pm »
Working on a little project with a friend. Based around Norse mythology. We've been chatting about old school platform games and old swedish lore. Creating a fun, consistent and semi-realistic style has been a big problem but I think I've got it. Finally.

Things started off... poorly. About a year ago I saw someone make really neat simple characters with very flat volumes. I liked it. I didn't minutes later. Apologies for the background color.

The other day I found a lot of time on my hand so I tried at it one more time.

Got help from someone on the IRC channel (thank you, sorry I forgot who you were/are).

Soon this jig will a run animation. Can anyone direct me to some good run animations to study or maybe some notable in-depth threads in Pixelation? Should I hide the shirt under the jacket? Does the hair read as a mohawk/faux hawk?

Mockup and tiles. 16x16. Any advice or general rules of thumb for constructing tile sets would be more than appreciated. Thank you.

All comments and critiques are heavily appreciated, thank you for taking a look.

Pixel Art / All aboard the tree bandwagon!
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:47:56 am »
Saw everyone else playing with trees. Why can't I?
I started off with a sloppy small sketch in a notebook. Girlfriend liked it. I started pixelling it. I require such simple motivation.

Sort of struggling on making the leaves look like a tree's leaves while still maintaining a afro+pompadour look.

I must preemptively thank you for any C or C or edits. Thank you.

Pixel Art / This robot can kill you with a Dminor7 chord!

I've been working on a little project using the Guitar Hero Xplorer controller. I've finally figured out the basic design of the game and how everything should work. Game Maker has built-in support for joysticks and the Xplorer is an accepted joystick!
After doodling in notebooks about it for the better half of a year I've decided to turn it into a game! I was using filler graphics from an old NES look-a-like project, for the sake of not having to make new ones. It's been too long since I've pushed pixels and it shows.

Here's what I've made in chronological order:

I don't really like the in game rotations so I think I should just pixel each pose by hand.

I'll have some sketches up later today.

Pixel Art / More flap, less fap.
« on: April 29, 2009, 11:23:19 pm »
Made this little wooden being for the sake of seeing if I could still push a pixel.

It was supposed to look like it was trying to fly. Looks like it's struggling to keep it's head above water.

C+C on design, animation and pixel technique are all welcome.

Pixel Art / Simple animation

I think it's a relatively smooth run. 12 frames, colors are irrelevant right now.
I feel a bit weird about how far the arms reach back. Don't know if I should have him lean a bit more.

I'll try to start ?skinning? this running blob. Any comments and criticism would be appreciated.

Pixel Art / Cutesy Tiles
« on: November 10, 2008, 07:40:38 pm »
Been playing with some tiles. I like the saturated colors and over all cute look. I feel like some thinks don't fit right, I haven't done many tiles anyway.

Any C+C, ideas or edits are very welcome and very appreciated. Thanks.

Pixel Art / Problems running.
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:41:54 am »
I was pretty hesitant to post some stuff since there are a few active threads about walk animations, which I have read over and over but still have problems. I keep attempting to fix the problems but new ones seem to appear.

The blue leg seems like it slides back and should be skate boarding or something. This is supposed to be a run animation but seems more like an awkward walk.
Any advice, comments, criticisms or edits are more than welcome.

Pixel Art / Face Off?
« on: January 03, 2008, 11:52:59 pm »
Today I was working on expressions, not really anything anatomical or even realistic. Just trying to convey emotions with the face. I haven't made anything note worthy in a while so I thought it would be nice to start with a boring palette and a 32x32 canvas. I got this:

I was really proud of it. It's got real character to it, I think so at least. It was a nice success so I felt like making a few others because I intended on making some emoticons for a forum soon. They'd be smaller ofcourse.

I kind of lost my thunder at 5. The fifth one was really bad and the 4th one wasn't very good. I tried avoiding symmetry for most of these, that explains the eyepatch.
Feel free to be harsh about them, I don't think anyone will be harsh but if it's for my own good I'd appreciate it.

I visited my grandmother in the hospital (broke her sacrum) and while she was sleeping I kind of whipped up this bugger:

and then reduced it to greyscale because I noticed all those colors had the same luminosity (same thing as value right?) and I remembered Xion making some TV headed robot with colors that were all the same value. Mine isn't nearly as nice, it's also in reverse.

C+C is welcomed, appreciated and encouraged. Thanks.

Pixel Art / My face

I made this self portrait a little while ago, would love to finish this. I think the skin's texture is ok. Needs some color work, hair is crap. looks like scribbles.
<Old-New>

Any c+c would be loved. <3 JoD

Pixel Art / [WIP] Tiles
« on: July 06, 2007, 05:28:53 pm »
I think these tiles are coming out kind of lousy.

I made a scene in hope of being able to cut it up and use them as tiles. Didn't work out to well. I think the grass part turned out really bad and the colors are directly out of crayola box. Should I make it more green/brown?

I'm really lost with what to do.
