i think you may be going about this in the wrong order

the leaves will cast a shadow all over the trunk, so after you've given value to the foliage is when you should be thinking about which parts of the trunk will be the darkest

I'm pretty sure the color effect is usually achieved by actually texturing the faces to emulate lighting (dakrer blues on sides and underneath) and turning off most/all lighting effects.

spaceman syndrome is likely coming from the purple outline, because we think he's being half lit by the moon and half lit by the purple planet nearby
do a test with just the one blue, or with two blues if he must have two differently colored outlines.
maybe making his outline's color dynamic based on the stage's elements?
