Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Time for some help: My Minecraft texture pack
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:59:43 am »
This texture pack has some lovely pixel art and lovely tiles... but to me it's unfortunately all over the place in terms of style... some tiles are very subtle in their contrast variations, and some are extremely harsh, completely clashing with each other!

You have to decide which way you want to go. Personally, I would prefer if you picked the subtle tiles, because the default tiles have a lot of contrast, and there is a very popular "classic RPG" set of tiles out there already which also has quite a lot of contrast, and is slightly similar to yours (and again, personally I like a very abstract set of tiles with only nine subtle colored squares for each tile, which makes the entire game look very smooth).

Oh, and regardless which way you go, the water tiles look awesome as a texture, but in your screenshots from the game, it's just a grainy mess. You need to ease off on the detail there, or kill some of the highlights.

Also, seventh from the left, four down... I have no idea what that is, so as an icon it fails (but also a symbol I do not recognize it).

Pixel Art / Re: 8-Bit game sprites and tiles

I do not think that the rock background needs to be pushed back more into the dark, because you very cleverly shaded all the edges of them which has the effect that the brain automatically sorts them in 3D space for you.

However, the vines in the background are only shaded at the very top, and if you don't focus your vision in that location, you may be fooled into thinking that it's in the foreground (until you see the foreground vine).

As for the dithering, I love it. It makes it feel very crisp and detailed on my display (Macbook Pro).

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Crystals and undead geologists! (EGA mockups)

With moves like this, there's a bit more than a slight discrepancy. :D

Again, rather difficult to read what's going on... how about a small fountain of blood? I bet you can make it cute as well. :)

I didn't even notice the knife before the edit, so that's bad I guess, but the deformed proportions hint back at the in-game sprites which is very cool.

Also, while on the issue of readability... it's already a bit mind bending to have to make out the fact that the ghosts in the background are actually three headed ghosts and not three separate ghosts, so when you blend two of those together in the foreground... I'm sorry, but it just becomes a mess. I thought he was attacked by a jellyfish/octupus.

But overall, I've never seen the EGA palette look this good. In fact, I've always despised it, but now I may have to reconsider.

I like the retro gameboy styling of this, but I hope it becomes an iPhone game or that you double the pixels because right now it kinda hurts my eyes to squint.

Also, the ninja looks more like a guy with a motorcycle helmet. How about trying to invert his colors?

Hoooooly crap this looks absolutely fantastic!

Only discovered it today and spend a few minutes being more and more impressed by each page I saw.

The main character still feels a bit like an odd choice to me...

oh man oh man. I was watching this project just admiring the work done, but I never expected to actually get to play it! (mac user)

Whoah, what? Did I miss a mac version somewhere? Tell me where, please!

iPhone version too perhaps? ;)

Totally commercial quality on the graphics anyway. I hope the gameplay holds up!

General Discussion / Re: Shantae Risky's Revenge Trailer

Haha, I just saw this and was about to post wondering if Henk Nieborg was back again? :)

At least my link has a large screenshot as well:

I was considering getting a DSi XL, perhaps now is the time. I absolutely loathe the god-awful purchasing system of DSiWare, though (locked into one single device, that if it breaks or you buy a new one, you will have to buy all of your games again). Let's hope this game gets an iPhone release as well, because iTunes DRM is a lot better and safer (for the CUSTOMER).

The guardian really needs serious fixing. He's incredibly cool from the chest up, but below the chest, the theme suddengly changes to ugly angular objects with black outlines... why not continue the swirly stone theme all throughout his body? Also, he is standing with his legs like he is about to take a dump... or someone's shoved a tree up his ass. Sorry.

It's got potential for greatness, though!  :y:
