General Discussion / Zooming of images
« on: November 25, 2013, 04:21:47 am »
Dear Pixelation (more specifically, whoever handles the coding of this website),

I recently started being active again on these forums, and I must say, it is a wonderful place. I love the feature that we can just click on an image to zoom in. But, for many people using many browsers, the zoom function could be a lot better. Many browsers use smoothing algorithms to make large photos look good when zoomed in, and, for the most part, it improves their look when zoomed in. When you are dealing with pixel art, however, this is not so. The blurred lines between pixel make it not only unsightly to look at photos zoomed it, but hard to critique it accurately. One fix to this problem is to use a browser that doesn't do this (I have tested, and I know for sure that Firefox 25.0.1 doesn't use these algorithms), but this is an annoyance, as many people prefer other browsers that they are used to. Luckily, there is a solution. I did a quick Google search, and found this link to a Yahoo Answers type site http://superuser.com/questions/530317/how-to-prevent-chrome-from-blurring-small-images-when-zoomed-in that explains how to fix this with CSS. The only reason I see for not implementing this is if you do not have access to the CSS. Pixelation runs on Simple Machines Forums, I gather, from the footer. I have no idea about how this works, if it is a complete forum management system, website and all, or simply a database for storing posts. If you do have access to the CSS, and can implement this, I'm sure many members will appreciate it.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#146 - Self Portrait- Facial Proportion
« on: November 24, 2013, 07:19:54 am »
Overview:
I recently saw someone do a self portrait on here (will insert name tomorrow when I am not so tired) and, since I got bored of tiling different cracks in bricks, I decided to give it a try. This is my first attempt at a self portrait (I have tried to draw faces in general, although not pixel art), so my anatomy is not the best. I just did this in the last hour or so, at midnight, so the shape, shading, etc. is VERY rudimentary. I am going to continue working on this tomorrow morning, but feel free to edit it as you wish.

Although I am looking for comments and criticism on every aspect of the work, here are some things that I have noticed that seem not quite right to me.

-Face might me a tiny bit too wide, but maybe I just never noticed how blocky my face is...
-Ears might be too big
-My nose points up, and I haven't found a way to convey that in the art. (will make more sense when you see my reference)
-Since my dithering is absolute bull stool, I have resorted to just using (too?) many colors. Not sure if it's fine, or if I should try dithering.
-My right eye is drifting up and to the right, not that I can't fix this. The only reason I didn't was, being a human being, I must sleep once in a while.

Just for clarification, I am male, and I have long hair. In my reference, it is tied back; I will most likely experiment with this in the future.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Beginning to Tile
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:58:48 pm »
Hello all,

I expect that many veterans of these forums have seen variations of the brick tile many hundred times. I am just starting out with tiling, and this brick tile is only one in many on the way. I am hoping to improve my skill with shading, losing "the grid" (of course, with bricks... you know :P), etc. These tiles will all be 32x32. Currently I have two brick tiles.

A regular brick tile

A cracked brick tile

I am going to make a few more variations of the cracked tile, to be posted later. Not sure if I should keep the regular brick tile without any imperfections, I tried, but it ended up being very "griddy" and ideas on that front would be great.

Color Info: Mortar: 3 colors Brick: 2 colors

Here is a tiled version with 4x4 tiles.

C&C appreciated, don't worry about being too harsh!

Well, time to play noob again  :P I can't seem to find out how to have a link and a picture (when you click on the picture it directs you to a certain webpage)  :mean:. I've tried the normal BBC (BCC?) code and nest the picture in a url, but that didn't work. Help?
