Pixel Art / Re: NES portrait help
« on: September 11, 2012, 09:43:01 pm »
Sounds good to me Kasumi!

Being someone that makes NES styled games I really ought to know more about this stuff lol. Anyways, I think the 4 colors as I have them will be fine. As long as it feels retro I'm happy :)

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like in-game

Fortunately only one portrait is being shown at any given time, so that cuts down on possible conflicts. So I'll still be working on these just for likeness, at some point I'll do one last update to see if anyone can catch any fault with them. These portraits are going to be pretty closely scrutinized, so I have to put in the work to get them as accurate as my pixeling skills will allow ;)

Thanks for all the guys!

Thanks for the help Facet!

So, if I understand the restrictions correctly, in a nutshell, there can only be 4 colors within each 8x8 section? Is that about right? Would the image on the right qualify as a proper NES rendition?

Here's everyone with the recommended adjustments, with no "NES optimization". Dom is improved in a way, but that area by his mustache and outer cheekbone is posing a challenge.

Thanks again!

Wow thanks guys! These are some great references! One huge advantage of making retro games is you never have to agonize over the palette lol. Its starting to get a little technical with the NES limitations though, I'll have to research it a bit more to make sure its legit. I also through in each guy's in-game character and reference, although Dom and Luke are still under construction.

Luckily I only have to do these 5 guys for the entire game, so I figured I just do them all together to keep them consistent ;) I feel like Nick and Luke are lookin' okay, although Luke's hat is a bit vexing. Paul I'm sort of on the fence about. Josh is getting closer, but isn't quite there yet. As for Dom I could use a second opinion, I'm not sure where I'm at with him.

Big thanks guys!

Pixel Art / NES portrait help
« on: September 10, 2012, 06:00:41 am »
Hi all!

I'm working on something for the "Continue?" show, featuring the cast of the show as playable characters (I'll get into these guys' in-game persona's at some point) but currently I'm really struggling with getting some decent text box portraits of these guys.

I feel like I'm in the right neck of the woods, but I could definitely use a few pointers! Its an NES styled game, so I'm restricted to the NES palette. I haven't done portraits of actual people in years, so my ability to capture somebody's likeness has diminished a bit :P Its an action game, so I want to idealize their appearance; think of these portraits as an action hero rendition of them.

I feel like the first one (Nick) is the best so far. The other two (Paul and Josh) I'm not quite sure what I'm missing. let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions to get these portraits a little closer to the real thing ;)

Added a light source and played with the palette a bit

General Discussion / Anti aliasing issue
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:20:54 am »
Hi all! I test driving a new computer, all seems well except I can't seem to turn off the anti aliasing when using Photoshop or running Game Maker games :P I looked all over the internets, but I couldn't find anything addressing this issue. I'm posting here partly out of desperation, but also because I figure some pixel artists may have run into this type of problem themselves. I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but I'm usually able to navigate settings type problems, but this time around, I got nothin' :P The specs are...

Model: Dell Inspiron 620
Graphics card: Intel HD graphics family
Running Windows 7

I suspect its the graphics card, I don't know what the heck a "Intel HD graphics family" card is :P

Just to better explain my issue, here's some examples of my issue...

Up close, everything's fine

But once I back up the view...

How the games used to look...

How they look now...

Its interesting that while one monitor is new, I have a dual monitor set up and I'm using one monitor that previously didn't have this problem with the old computer. This older monitor now has this same issue. Is it the graphics card? Is it windows 7? Anyway, I haven't a clue, but I'm hoping some pixel artists might be sympathetic to my problem :P There really isn't any support for this kind of question (at least where I've looked in the past few hours). All the posts and tutorials I've seen are talking about AA for text, or how to navigate to the setting within a specific game :P

Thanks to all who reply!

[EDIT]
Stuff I've tried:
1) Turned off second monitor
2) Turned off Aero and all hardware acceleration
3) Tried different resolutions
4) Shouted at computer lol ;)

Pixel Art / Outer space scene help
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:37:06 pm »
Working on a level select in the form of an outer space scene. I'm generally happy with the shadowing on the space station, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong on the planets. It looks okay from a distance, but up close its kind of yuck. Is there enough shadow on the planets? Too much? I feel like I'm close to making it look cool, I'm just not sure where to go next to wrap this thing up :P

Palette:

Pixel Art / Character full body C+C
« on: September 05, 2011, 10:09:30 am »
I'm a little rusty at figure drawing, this is my first attempt at a portrait for a character. There's a few proportion issues, I'm not sure if this is salvageable or if I'd be better off starting again from scratch :P Any pointers?

The design is based on the little blue guy in the pic here:

Here's the palette I'm working with...

Worked on the legs a bit

Pixel Art / Infernal Edge pixel art CC
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:50:18 am »
Hi all! Just thought I'd share some of the pixel art for the latest Lazy Brain Game, Infernal Edge. Overall I'm pretty happy with the results this time around, the use of brown seems to somehow give it a darker feel than black, go figure :P The Big boss there is the only one that has any real black, I didn't really want him to since its inconsistent with the rest of the art, but at a certain point I realized I was worrying about it more than the player would be lol.

Any pointers on the animations (what little there is) and the overall feel are more than welcome! I like to think I'm improving a bit from when I first started posting on here, but there's still so much to learn!

If you want to see it all in-game, here's the link...

Pixel Art / Re: "Dream Girl" NES character CC
« on: August 19, 2011, 07:13:17 pm »
Thanks for the replies! I'm still working on some of the basic gameplay, but I've also been playing around with a couple of characters...

Pig with a top hat..

I've been struggling with this "rabbit tower", but it's getting close...

Aside from that, I've just been doing some tests on background tilesets, nothing too committal yet, but it looks okay...

The rabbit tower is kind of giving me headaches, partly because I need the sprites to be split up so I can adjust the height with the middle sprite...

Any tips on the rabbit tower are greatly appreciated, does it need another frame? Is there any kind of reference for this kind of thing?

[EDIT]
Working on a crow friend, still pretty messed up but I got at least some sort of start on it :P

Thanks for looking ;)

Thanks for the reply Fickludd! You make a very good point about the eyes. As per usual with me, I'm sticking with the palette I got (mainly for continuity between games). Here's the "season 2" palette I'm working with...

To address the "eye white" issue, I gave her some makeup to accentuate her eyes, although I'm not sure a girl her age should be wearing eye makeup lol. Let me know if this looks better :)

I'm working on a walk cycle, I had to make her legs a bit longer for that, I'll post a gif of that soon :) I'll also work on her posture for some of the emotions ;)

This character will indeed be in a alice in wonderland kind of situation. Imagine Little Nemo with a light/dark world aspect to it (dream/nightmare) with inspirations from alice in wonderland, and happy tree friends. This character is has some crazy times ahead of her lol.

[EDIT]

First attempt at a walk animation, I just used little nemo as a reference, it looks... okay I think.

Regular walk

More girly walk

Big thanks!
